Another challenger has declared his candidacy for the 17th Congressional District seat currently held by Democrat Chris Deluzio.

State Rep. Rob Mercuri (R-Allegheny) announced Tuesday that he would seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat held by Deluzio in what is one of the Keystone State’s most competitive races.

A West Point graduate who served two tours in Iraq as a member of the U.S. Army, Mercuri earned a MBA from UMass-Amherst and after working for a pair of accounting firms, he joined PNC Bank where he rose to senior vice president of risk and finance.

Now in his second term in Harrisburg, his website states that he “authored legislative reforms in the areas of education, finance, autonomous transportation, and data privacy. He has also been a champion for fiscal responsibility and economic development through innovation, lower tax rates, and reduced barriers to entry for entrepreneurs.”

“I’m running to protect our communities, grow our economy, and fight for our future,” he said on social media. “As a veteran, I know that America is worth fighting for. As a father, I care deeply about our future. As a small business owner, I know that anything is possible here with hard work. I’m running for Congress to help restore the promise of prosperity to our region and to revive the American dream.

Mercuri becomes the second candidate in the GOP race, joining Rev. Jim Nelson, senior pastor of New Birth Ministries in Duquesne. Both Nelson and Deluzio are also military veterans.

Mercuri would still be eligible under state law to run for his state House seat in conjunction with his U.S. House campaign.

Deluzio defeated Jeremy Shaffer by 24,000 votes last November to win his seat in Washington.

The 17th District comprises part of Allegheny County, including the townships of Aleppo, Baldwin, Collier, Crescent, East Deer, Fawn, Findlay, Frazer, Hampton, Harmar, Harrison, Indiana, Kennedy, Kilbuck, Leet, Marshall, McCandless, Moon, Mount Lebanon, Neville, North Fayette, O’Hara, Ohio, Penn Hills, Pine, Reserve, Richland, Robinson, Ross, Scott, Shaler, South Fayette, Springdale, Stowe and West Deer, as well as the boroughs of Aspinwall, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Blawnox, Brackenridge, Braddock Hills, Bradford Woods, Carnegie, Castle Shannon, Cheswick, Churchill, Coraopolis, Crafton, Dormont, Edgewood, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Etna, Forest Hills, Fox Chapel, Franklin Park, Glen Osborne, Glenfield, Green Tree, Haysville, Heidelberg, Ingram, Leetsdale, McDonald (Allegheny County Portion), McKees Rocks, Millvale, Oakdale, Oakmont, Pennsbury Village, Rosslyn Farms, Sewickley, Sewickley Heights, Sewickley Hills, Sharpsburg, Springdale, Swissvale (PART, Districts 02 (all blocks except 2014, 2015, 3007, 3008, 3009 and 3010 of tract 515100), 03, 04 and 05), Tarentum, Thornburg, Verona, West View and Wilkinsburg and all of Beaver County.
