Senate Confirms Philadelphia Native Ash Carter as Secretary of Defense

Casey-ToomeyOn the same day that Democrats announced Philadelphia will host the 2016 National Convention, native-son Ash Carter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Secretary of Defense.

In a White House press release, Obama said that Carter served as a key leader on national security in the first years of his presidency. Obama also noted the overwhelming bipartisan support in today’s confirmation.

Both of Pennsylvania’s Senators, Democrat Bob Casey Jr. and Republican Pat Toomey, voted in favor of Carter. In fact, Carter earned 93 favorable votes while only five senators went against the grain–all of them Republicans–and two did not cast a ballot.

“With his decades of experience, Ash will help keep our military strong as we continue the fight against terrorist networks, modernize our alliances, and invest in new capabilities to keep our armed forces prepared for long-term threats,” President Obama said.

The president went on to say that Carter will play a central role in working with Congress to find a more responsible approach to defense spending.

“We have the strongest military in history of the world, and with Secretary Carter at the Pentagon and our troops serving bravely around the world, we’re going to keep it that way,” the President concluded.

Carter is from Abington Township in Montgomery County.
