“I believe there’s more we can do, and I want to get back to Harrisburg and fight for it.”
With those words, Pennsylvania Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) announced that he would be running for re-election for his senate seat.
Now in his 28th year representing the 43rd state senatorial district, Costa is a lifelong resident of Allegheny County, born and raised in Pittsburgh, and now lives with his wife Roxanne in Forest Hills. He has served as the minority leader in the Senate since 2010.
“I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together,” Costa said in a video announcing his re-election run. “But I know we’re not done. And that’s why I’m running for re-election.”
During his time as a senator, Costa has advocated for stricter gun control measures, sponsored legislation that helped longtime home owners get tax cuts and voted against measures to limit Pennsylvanian’s access to reproductive healthcare.
Most recently, he joined other lawmakers in urging the passage of anti-hate crime laws.
“I want to bring these measures across the finish line and into law,” he said in the campaign video.
Costa is the lone Democrat in the race for the 43rd District seat as of this writing. He did face a primary opponent in his last time to the post in 2020, defeating businessman Bill Brittain by more than 50 percentage points.
There is yet to be a Republican candidate who has made a formal announcement.
The 43rd state senatorial district comprises a portion of the city of Pittsburgh, the boroughs of Braddock Hills, Chalfant, Churchill, Edgewood, Forest Hills, Mount Oliver, Oakmont, Rankin, Swissvale, Verona and Wilkinsburg, as well as Penn Hills and Wilkins townships.
