Senator Casey Joins Local Senior to Oppose Republican Efforts to Privatize Social Security

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) joined a local senior at PA VOTE 2010 press conference at the Heinz-Menaker Senior Center in Harrisburg to discuss the importance of protecting and preserving Social Security for older Pennsylvanians and future generations. Senator Casey discussed Republicans’ risky plans to privatize Social Security and explained what’s at stake for seniors if Republicans win control of Congress in November.

“Social Security is a promise we made to our nation’s seniors,” said Senator Casey. “We must keep our promise to older Pennsylvanians by protecting and preserving Social Security. Pennsylvania’s seniors can’t afford the Republicans’ risky plans to privatize Social Security and allow Wall Street bankers to gamble with seniors’ retirement security. We must stop Republicans’ plans to privatize Social Security and one way to do that is to elect Democratic leaders in November.”

“My Social Security benefits help me make ends meet,” said Elizabeth Williams, a Dauphin County resident and one of the 1.8 million older Pennsylvanians who receive Social Security benefits. “Without my benefits, I’d be in a very difficult financial spot. That’s why I support Democratic leaders who are fighting to protect Social Security.”

Republican leaders in Congress have once again made privatizing Social Security a key part of their agenda. Despite the financial crisis, they want to return to President Bush’s failed policy of Social Security privatization, which will put their seniors’ retirement savings into the hands of the Wall Street bankers that brought our economy to the brink of collapse.

PA VOTE 2010 is the Pennsylvania Democratic Party and Organizing for America-Pennsylvania’s (OFA-PA) unprecedented effort to help elect Democratic leaders up and down the ticket who will represent Pennsylvania families.
