Shapiro To Deliver Keynote Address At New Hampshire Democratic Convention

Gov. Josh Shapiro

Amid buzz that he could be a future standard-bearer for the Democratic Party, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro will be the headliner at the New Hampshire Democratic Party convention on September 30.

It will be Shapiro’s first visit to an early nominating state, fueling fire that the first-term Democratic governor could be a presidential candidate in 2028.

Shapiro plans to speak to President Joe Biden’s accomplishments and his support for his reelection campaign. He is also expected to tout his record and wins in races for Attorney General and Governor in the Keystone State.

“In Pennsylvania, we defeated extremism and showed the rest of the country what it looks like to come together behind a vision for a better future — one where we create real opportunity while defending our rights and advancing real freedom for all,” Shapiro said in a statement Tuesday. “New Hampshire voters face a similar choice next November — they will decide a critical open race for Governor and play a central role in reelecting President Biden and retaking the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Ray Buckley, the chairman of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, said Shapiro’s visit will be beneficial to his state’s gubernatorial battle with the withdrawal of Republican Gov. Chris Sununu.

“Hearing from Governor Shapiro on his record of accomplishment and success is the perfect kick off to our 2024 election efforts,” he said in a statement.

Shapiro has drawn plaudits for his ability to bring together various stakeholders and complete the reconstruction of I-95 just 12 days after the busy roadway collapsed due to a truck fire.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to speak to Granite Staters at this critical time for both New Hampshire and our nation’s future and rally with them behind Democratic candidates who, like me, believe government can be a productive force for good,” Shapiro said in Tuesday’s statement.

The visit also is the first to New Hampshire for Shapiro who is likely to play a key role in Democrats’ 2024 efforts and is considered by some to be among the party’s top contenders for its presidential nomination in 2028.

The 50-year-old chief executive of the state has brushed aside questions about any presidential ambitions dating to his campaign for governor last year.  When posed the question in an interview with WGAL-TV, Shapiro responded by saying, “I’m interested in leading here in Pennsylvania.”

He continued by saying that he is “focused on doing this job and this job only, and it’s the only job I want to do. But I’m grateful that the nation is taking a look at what we’re doing here in Pennsylvania,” he said.

  1. Shapiro should be 2nd term Governor and less than 60 years old. Sweetspot for a run for POTUS.
