Shots were fired during a rally for former President Donald Trump on Saturday evening in Butler, Pa.
The Associated Press is referring to the shots as an assassination attempt on the 45th president.
It appeared that Trump may have been struck, as it was visible that his ear was covered in blood as Secret Service agents tried to rush him from the stage.
It is the first attempt on the life of a president or presidential candidate since 1981 when former President Ronald Reagan was shot.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, said that “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
President Joe Biden just spoke and said that he has been briefed on the incident in Butler, located 35 miles north of Pittsburgh.
“I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.
Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
“Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured,” said Vice President Kamala Harris. “We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting …. Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.”
Former President Bill Clinton tweeted “Violence has no place in America, especially in our political process. Hillary and I are thankful that President Trump is safe, heartbroken for all those affected by the attack at today’s rally in Pennsylvania, and grateful for the swift action of the U.S. Secret Service.”
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro tweeted that “Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable. It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States. I have been briefed on the situation. Pennsylvania State Police are on the scene in Butler County and working with our federal and local partners.”
U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-09) was in the front row at the rally along with Rep. Mike Kelly (R-16) and GOP senatorial candidate Dave McCormick.
According to a tweet from Fox News’ Chad Pergram, Meuser says he heard 8-10 shots and it appeared to him that multiple people in the crowd may have been hit. He added that it sounded to him like a .22 or a small caliber weapon.
McCormick told CNN “This is a line here that has been crossed that is just horrific and unforgivable.”
Former President Barack Obama tweeted that “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.”
This is a breaking story. More details to come.
