Sierra Club Steps Into 6th District to Endorse Trivedi After Two Cycles of Staying Neutral

While This Leading Environmental Group Has Left Gerlach Alone in the Past, This Year They Support Trivedi

ELVERSON, Pa. – After not endorsing in Congressman Jim Gerlach’s elections in recent years, the Sierra Club has thrown their influential support behind challenger Manan Trivedi, the Democratic nominee for the 6th Congressional District. Trivedi has shown his commitment during this campaign to finding realistic solutions that will simultaneously create jobs and end pollution through clean energy. On his website, Congressman Gerlach has decided to avoid showing his constituents what he will do for them in the future, having laid out absolutely no plans.

“I thank the Sierra Club for their brave endorsement and support,” Trivedi said. “While Congressman Gerlach has used those Washington tricks to make himself appear moderate on issues of energy and the environment on the past, it is clear that when he goes to Washington, he forgets all about what’s important to the Sierra Club. And while it’s easy to avoid picking a fight with an incumbent, the 6th District deserves better, and the Sierra Club knows it.”

The Sierra Club cited both his past experience as a doctor and his thorough plans for the future of the 6th District as the deciding factors in this endorsement.

“Manan Trivedi’s background and deep understanding of the issues make him the best candidate for Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District,” said Jim Keller, Political Chair of the Kittatinny Group of the Sierra Club. “His commitment to upgrading our power grid and his strong support of growing clean energy will bring the next generation of jobs and protect the environment for the future. Plus, his unique background as a physician means he understands the connection between public health and the environment and has the first-hand knowledge to address it.”

During his campaign, Trivedi has put a focus on growing jobs in the 6th District through ways that will also help to stop the pollution of the air our children breathe and the water our children drink. In Washington, most have tried to cast the problem as one or the other — jobs or clean energy — ignoring the solutions that can do both.

“Congressman Jim Gerlach and everyone else down in Washington spend their time finding issues to play politics with, instead of finding solutions to our nation’s problems,” Trivedi said. “But out here in the real world we know that when you’re faced with a problem, you need to figure out what’s wrong and find realistic ways to fix it instead of employing meaningless rhetoric and speaking in absolutes. I know that we can find policies that are anti-pollution and will end our dependence on foreign oil while promoting job growth, like clean energy manufacturing, and that’s why I have made that a major plank of my jobs plan.”

Manan Trivedi is the Democratic nominee for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District. He is a primary care physician, a former Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy, and an Iraq War veteran from Berks County.
