Rep. Matt Gergely

Allegheny County state Rep. Matt Gergely has passed away following complications after a medical emergency over the holidays.

Gergely represented the 35th Legislative District which consists of the cities of Clairton, Duquesne and McKeesport, the township of South Versailles and the boroughs of Homestead, Liberty, Lincoln, Munhall, Port Vue, Versailles, West Homestead, West Mifflin, Whitaker and White Oak.

The Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus announced his passing on Sunday night.

“We are so deeply sorry to learn of the passing of Representative Matt Gergely, and we already miss him more than words can express. A public servant to the very end, Representative Gergely left an indelible mark on everyone who met him. McKeesport lost a terrific champion today. We wish his loved ones peace and comfort as they mourn his untimely passing. May his memory be a blessing.”

The House Republican caucus also issued a statement upon news of Gergely’s death.

“We join in grieving the loss of our friend and colleague, Rep. Matt Gergely. Matt left behind a young family, and we send them our condolences, as well as our thoughts and prayers.

“While Matt was only in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives a short time, his commitment to his family and community were deeply felt among his peers and he quickly earned friends and respect on both sides of the aisle. His voice and presence will be missed both in Harrisburg and southeast Allegheny County.”

Gergely was elected to the House in a special election to succeed Lt. Gov. Austin Davis in 2023 and earned reelection in November.

“Representative Gergely dedicated his entire life to public service,” said Davis is a statement. “I witnessed his service first hand as McKeesport School Official, City Administrator, and finally as a state representative. He was a tireless champion for working families in the Mon Valley. My heart goes out to his wife, Holly, his family, friends and community. The Second Lady and I are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

The 45-year-old Gergely graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002. He served as City Administrator and Chief of Staff to McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko from 2012-17 and then as McKeesport Area School District’s Business Manager from 2017-2020. Before he became state representative, he held the position of McKeesport’s Chief Revenue Officer.

He is survived by his wife, Holly, and two sons.
