Updated with Video: Leach, Turzai to Debate Voter ID on Fox News

We don’t use the phrase “must see TV” lightly. Tomorrow, Pa. House Majority Leader Mike Turzai and Pa. Senator Daylin Leach will square off over the new voter ID law on live television.

According to an email from Leach’s campaign, the two are scheduled to appear on America’s News HQ on the Fox News channel Sunday at 1:30pm.

Turzai (in)famously said back in June that the new law, which requires voters to present valid photo identification, “is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania”.

He later clarified that he meant that Romney would not have to contend with voter fraud, which he says favors Democrats – but Democrats from Pa. to DC have called the comment an admission of the law’s political motivations.

Most voters who presently lack ID are traditionally Democratic demographic groups: elderly citizens, minorities and students.

Leach has been the loudest critic of the law, frequenting the MSNBC circuit and characterizing Voter ID as a deliberate effort to disenfranchise voters.

“If you have to stop people voting to win elections, your ideas suck,” Leach said, also in June – a quote that became a big hit on the website Reddit.

The law was upheld in a lower state court in August, but the Pa. Supreme Court wants to see the issue re-litigated to determine the availability of ID for those who presently lack it, and whether disenfranchisement is a risk.

  1. Ryan,

How much did those postcards cost? There are TV ads, too. People are still denying hearing it. 11 Million spent on zero cases of voter fraud at a time when the Governor cries that we’re broke.

  2. Isn’t it odd that FOX NEWS just happened to run out of time when Senator Leach was about to expose Turzai’s “lies”.

  3. Turazi Lies… I received a post card in the mail from the Department of State informing me of the upcoming voter ID requirement. These were sent to every voter. Everyone is now on notice and has time to get an ID.

  4. Leader Turzai made it perfectly clear why this expensive and inconvenient government law is needed due to the fact that there has been absolutely no case of voter fraud uncovered in the state in history to which it would apply. But it could happen, people. Our next government regulation will require everyone to buy health insurance … oh, wait, that’s Obamacare.

  5. Watching that smug, contemptible, lying Turzai makes me sick to my stomach. I’m hoping that the court knocks him and his cohort Metcalfe from their perch.

  6. Mike,

You obviously have never worked a phone bank before. 65% of those we are reaching out to who have been disenfranchised over this Photo ID to vote have no idea this law is coming.

When I registered for the draft, my full name was used. My Driver’s License doesn’t even have my middle initial. I have to re-register to vote, and I hope I don’t become flagged as one of the 8,000 “fraudulent” registrations. If the letter of the law is that there has to be “substantial confirmation” of name, I fail. Never mind I haven’t missed ANY election in 20 years, and know many of the poll workers outside of the voting place.

This law, as the Dishonorable Turazi stated himself, isn’t for one-vote. It’s to push the GOP agenda, and it’s going to blow up in their face on election day.

  7. Daylin Leach blatantly advocates for illegal aliens in this state which cost taxpayers over $1.4 billion every year. He has proven violating his oath of office is of no concern to him. Why then would anyone be surprised that he also enjoins with other Progressives in attempting to further dilute our sovereignty?

  8. Turzai is ridiculous and just regurgitating the same schtick over and over. And he is not the Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and anyone who has ever stood facing him while he is speaking would know why that is a good thing.

  9. Rep. Turzai is clearly reading from something. Is his ability to defend this legislation that bad that he has to read from notes? Yet again, he switched from a conversation about voter impersonation to describe voter fraud that wouldn’t even be prevented by voter ID legislation. Their argument is so weak, it just makes the inherent partisan nature of this legislation that much more obvious. They don’t have the facts on their side; they passed this law to help Republicans win elections, plain and simple.
