Sunday Show Preview: May 3, 2015

MicrophonesEvery Friday afternoon, we provide a preview of the various Sunday morning political talk shows that are filmed and broadcast throughout the commonwealth.

Our hope is to alert readers to the important interviews and insights that each show in their region offers.

We’re just starting out and our hope is this feature will grow with time. So, if there is a program you’d like to recommend or, better yet, you work for a program not yet featured here send us a message (sysnyder@politicspa.com) and we’ll try to include it.

Host Matt O’Donnell and our panelists talk at length about the Baltimore Riots in reaction to Freddie Gray’s death and how Philadelphia could be the next to erupt if issues of police transparency are not addressed. We also talk about the Mayor’s race leading up to the 6abc Democratic Mayoral Primary Debate on 6abc LIVE at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 5th, as well as give a report card for Governor Wolf’s first 100 Days in office.

Journalists Roundtable

Lancaster is Pennsylvania’s eighth largest city, with a diverse community of nearly 60,000 people and a metropolitan area of more than 500,000. This week’s Journalists Roundtable features reporters and editors at LNP/lancasteronline.com: Suzanne Cassidy, Opinion Editor; Joe Hainthaler, Deputy Opinion Editor; and Karen Shuey and Jeff Hawkes, Staff Writers. Topics discussed include: municipal pensions, school funding and the state budget, a citywide campaign to eliminate hunger, a low-income housing shortage in the city, and a proposed gas pipeline that may pass through preserved farmland and the effort by two communities to block the pipeline through home rule. KD/PG Sunday Edition

CBS2-Pittsburgh-11:30 a.m.

This week’s show is focused on the relief effort for victims of the devastating 7.8 earthquake in Nepal, a week ago, tomorrow.

Pittsburgh has about 150-people from Nepal.

Our guests include one of them – James Joshi, Ph.D. – Associate Professor of Information Sciences, at the University of Pittsburgh.

Also with us, are Jonas Johnson, M.D. – Chairman and Distinguished Service Professor, and an Ear, Nose, & Throat specialist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Eye & Ear Institute – who has helped to treat patients in Nepal, and whose brother is former president of the non-profit, Himalayan Health Care.

Our third guest is Luke Hingson – President of the Pittsburgh-based, Brother’s Brother Foundation – which has a tremendous track record of providing medical supplies and financial aid to victims of natural disasters and other challenges, around the world. This non-profit partners with medical and charitable agencies in the affected area, to give relief to those who have been affected.

Our co-hosts, this week, are KDKA-TV News anchor Stacy Smith and John Allison – Associate Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

This week’s Pennsylvania Newsmakers interviews Mike Crossey, President of the PSEA, for a discussion of education funding and pension reform. On “The Sunday Business Page”, we’ll have an in-depth interview with the new Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh – Patrick Gallagher, Ph.D. The interview with him also touches on Gallagher’s personal role in the search and selection of new head football coach, Pat Narduzzi, and new athletic director, Scott Barnes, just chosen last week. Our final segment is the story of the efforts of a faith-based organization – “Shepherding the Next Generation” – to help children in at-risk areas, and improve the quality of their education.

Our guests include:

Tom Pearce – National Director of “Shepherding the Next Generation”, Cynthia Wallace, M.A. – Executive Pastor of Bible Center Church of God in Christ – in Pittsburgh’s Homewood-Brushton neighborhood, and former Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Charlie Batch – founder of “The Best of the Batch Foundation” – a non-profit organization that is devoted to changing the lives of children and families in distressed communities, by building character, self-esteem, and an appreciation for education.
