The Pennsylvania Society is an annual weekend retreat for Pennsylvania’s politicians and business leaders and will be held December 6-7, 2024 in New York City.
In 1899, James Barr Ferree, an historian and native Pennsylvanian living in New York City, invited 55 fellow Pennsylvanians also living in New York to join him for dinner at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel. While enjoying a meal together, they decided to form a group known initially as “The Pennsylvania Society of New York.” Their goal was to establish a society “uniting all Pennsylvanians at home and away from home in bonds of friendship and devotion to their native or adopted state” and would meet for dinner every year, same time, same place.
For more than 120 years The Pennsylvania Society has brought together Pennsylvanians from all walks of life to honor achievement, recognize greatness, and contribute to charitable causes benefitting the Commonwealth. With no affiliation to any particular political party, business or profession, The Pennsylvania Society maintains its centuries-long commitment to civility, where members celebrate service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with an abiding respect for one another.
The main event of the weekend is the “Pennsylvania Society Dinner,” which is sponsored by “The Pennsylvania Society,” a nonprofit corporation. In recent years the receptions hosted by lobbyists, political committees, and corporations have taken on increased importance.
It has drawn criticism in some circles because of its image as a stereotypical “smoke-filled room” where lobby groups gain access to government officials. Other observers criticize the retreat for being held in New York City instead of within Pennsylvania.
Thomas B. Hagen, a longtime Erie business, civic and philanthropic leader, will receive the Society’s 2024 Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement at its Annual Dinner on December 7. He is chairman and former CEO of the Erie Insurance Group and also chairman of Custom Engineering Co. Hagen, a retired U.S. Navy captain is a past Chairman of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry and a former president of the Society.
The Society’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement was founded in 1908 and is presented annually to a prominent person, or persons, in recognition of leadership, citizenship and contributions to the arts, science, education and industry. In addition to the honor itself, The Pennsylvania Society contributes to a Pennsylvania charity chosen by the recipient of the Gold Medal, subject only to the approval of the Society Council. Hagen’s charity will be announced at the Annual Dinner.

I understand it’s tradition to hold this in New York, but we have many fine establishments in PA. Possible rotate between Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, many venues in the Pocono region. Even King of Prussia, although traffic near the mall is tough this time of year . I left out Erie due to lake-effect snow. Think of the tax money that would flow to Harrisburg instead of Albany.
Well, well, well…
AmeriHealth Caritas is having a soirée at Manhattan’s Kimberly Hotel, your “pied-a-terre” in Midtown (yes, I had to Google what it meant). They sure have come a long way since Blue pushed the nuns out.
Can’t pay for kidney transplants but will buy you a drink – depending on your committee assignment, of course.
Spring is around the corner, which means it will be time for this clueless bunch to trade in their big city duds for sack cloth and begin their annual begging ritual.
When this happens, and the Shapiro Administration should remind their army of lobbyists of the fine waitered finger foods served just off Lexington Avenue in December. Could they get any further from Chester or their mission?
Sad

Reginald –
Do you still believe in Santa? The ironically named AmeriHealth Caritas stopped being a health care company years ago.
Today they are a pirate ship that pulls billions for our Capitol each year and denies care. However, the do make a rather attractive t shirt, and last year someone gave me a soft pretzel – there was even a DJ!
My only question is this: I have a card, as does my disabled daughter, are we invited to this shindig?
I need an answer now. My Jeep is idling, and I’ve shined my membership card.

Please keep up posted! Here are a few tips if you are attending:
To find Lou Barletta in the crowd just look for the gleaming pearly whites. And be on the lookout to catch him berating any service establishment staff — baristas, wait staff, bar staff — for not having the same skin color as he does or for not speaking the same language as he does (northeastern pennsylvanian?).
Joe Gale might be there is his parents let him stay out late.
Kathy Boockvar will probably not be there, because she missed the deadline for RSVP-ing to the advertisement she also missed. Kapische?
Mikey Stack. Will be find time to fly in from the west coast? Where he’s super busy with his many new gigs. An (unpaid) model for men’s hair care products. A barista at a local hipster coffee shop. A happy hour bartender at a local bar. And of course doing his (unpaid) open-microphone standup comedy nights (hoping to be discovered).
