The Hill: Scott Perry Vying For Freedom Caucus Chair

Next stop Chairman?

According to a report from The Hill, Rep. Scott Perry (R-York) is one of three Republicans in the House Freedom Caucus that is making a bid to become their next chairman. Reps. Warren Davidson (R-OH) and Jody Hice (R-GA) are the other two GOP house members hoping to lead the approximate 30 “most conservative” Republicans in the House.

Current chairman, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) told reporters last week that he was planning to “pass the baton” to someone else for the next session according to The Hill.

One Freedom Caucus member, who remained unnamed in the report from The Hill, stated the Perry is thought to be the front-runner, with some suggesting that he “was being groomed in the job throughout the year.”

Perry’s office did not provide specifics about this reported bid for chairman.

“At this time, I have no substantiated information. Freedom Caucus members are working among themselves to come to a decision,” said Brandy Brown, Perry’s communications director.

Perry was re-elected for a fourth term in Congress last month after narrowly edging out Democrat George Scott for Pennsylvania’s newly drawn 10th district.

Perry’s new district that he will represent next session went to President Trump by about 10 points in 2016. The old boundaries he has represented the three previous terms went to President Trump by over 20 points.

In his most recent re-election contest, his Democratic opponent’s campaign often used Perry’s position in the Freedom Caucus as a point of criticism, blaming the conservative group for the “gridlock and hyper-partisanship” in Congress. Scott’s campaign particularly hit Perry on being one of the 11 House Republicans to introduce articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in July.

During a debate between Perry and Scott in October, the York Dispatch details a spirited back and forth between the two over what the Freedom Caucus stands for.

“The Freedom Caucus are the people who are actually trying to save the money,” Perry said during the debate. “…The Freedom Caucus is process organization, not an ideological organization.”

  1. Perry will incur the wrath of his new district if he adheres to the methodology of Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan over the next two years. The results of his election show that kind of mind set won’t be tolerated.

    1. “Results of the election”…oh you mean winning despite Republicans getting their ass kicked all across the country?
      Perry is solid political gold.
