Toomey’s Supercommittee TV Tour

By Ali Carey, Contributing Writer

Amidst speculation that the supercommittee is poised to admit defeat on its deadline as soon as Monday, Senator Pat Toomey hasn’t given up on reaching an agreement. He delivered the GOP’s weekly address on Saturday, and spoke for the Republican side on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday.

In each appearance Toomey, who turned 50 on Thursday, doesn’t look like he’s had the chance to celebrate – or rest – in recent days.

In the GOP Address on Spending and Deficit Reduction, Toomey called the committee a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but said  that the US will follow in Europe’s footsteps to economic bedlam if his Democratic colleagues don’t join the GOP plan.

“Across the Atlantic, we’re watching a fiscal disaster unfold in Europe with social unrest, riots in the streets, governments failing, financial markets imploding and imminent bankruptcy,” he said, somberly. “Sadly, this is the inevitable result of an extended period of inadequate economic growth and wildly excessive debt.”

As a member of the supercommittee, Toomey is charged with finding a net reduction of at least $1.2 trillion in federal spending. Republicans by and large have coalesced around his plan to end loopholes in the tax code, cut spending and tinker with entitlements.

He continued the theme during his appearance on Face the Nation, when he emphasized that supercommittee members have put an enormous amount of time and effort into trying to reach an agreement.

Toomey admitted that a general resistance to bipartisan solutions in Congress has proved tremendously challenging.  Case in point: anti-tax activist Grover Norquist said Toomey’s plan is it is today would be “poison,” and should be embraced only as a bargaining position. Democrats, meanwhile, argue that the proposal doesn’t ask enough of wealthy Americans and takes too much from entitlements.

  1. You people are pathetic. He is the ONLY one that has offered a proposal to raise revenues. I’m proud Toomey is my senator. Keep up the good work!

  2. Toomey always stays on the Republican talking points. He again fails to acknowledge that the deep austerity cuts made in Europe also led to the riots – not the “wildly excessive debt”. He also wants to lower tax rates for the wealthy – that was part of his his so-called compromise. The Pennsylvanians who voted for him should be ashamed. The rest of us continue to write to Toomey and express our opposing views and continually receive letters with his Republican talking points, with no acknowledgment that Republican policies have also contributed to the same “social unrest” as in Europe.

  3. Toomey failed the country when he had the bright idea to hold America’s credit rating hostage with his leadership of the unprecedented seizure of the debt limit, which resulted in our country’s first S&P downgrade, all because Toomey refused to face reality on taxes. His presence on the Super Committee guaranteed another failure, which takes place today. He will doubtless try to weasel out of the penalties that kicked in when the Super Committee failed. Pennsylvanians ought to be ashamed.
