Toomey a “Senator to Watch” on Immigration

Official PortraitThe U.S. Senate soon will take up immigration reform, an issue made even more complicated by internal GOP politics. Roll Call says Pat Toomey is a Senator to watch in the coming debate.

The biggest reason? His bipartisan push for background checks showed a willingness to cut across the aisle on big issues.

However, unlike a few other Republicans on Roll Call’s list, Toomey represents a state with relatively small population of Latino voters.

Here is the Toomey rundown from CQ Roll Call:

Patrick J. Toomey, R-Pa.

Toomey, the former Club for Growth president, has emerged in the past few years as one of the GOP’s top deal-makers in the Senate, though admittedly, in this political climate, that’s an easier title to acquire than it used to be.

As CQ Roll Call reported in April, Toomey was a lead co-sponsor of a failed background check bill and his push on the issue won him favor with many moderates at home — something political consultants already are saying he will need to win re-election in 2016.

  1. A member of the Lehigh Valley Tea Party, I have organized a demonstration for this Saturday in front of his Allentown office.

We want to remind Senator Toomey who it was that put him there. The members are angry enough about his gun control efforts. If he votes yes, I don’t care if I have to work on behalf of the Democrat to see him thrown out of office.

We are done compromising, and the GOP had better figure that out. Don’t believe me? Ask Mitt Romney.

  2. Toomey has lost most of the passionate conservatives who worked to get him elected. With his support for gun control legislation and other transgressions he is done. Maybe his couch sitting moderates will turn out for the door to doors, most Conservatives no way, no how. I hope to see a primary challenge with a real Conservative but knowing a little about the “party” in Pennsylvania this is probably too much to ask.

We see a government totally out of control. Totally above the pale with Senator Toomey “compromising” away our rights under the Constitution. He is toast. He might as well “moderately” vote for Amnesty because he simply won’t be around in a couple years. His vote yea will help nail shut the coffin for the Republican party.

  3. Why Toomey is abandoning the people who got him elected is a mystery. Gun control, and now support for an issue that is a result of government malfeasance, neither “needed” to be done. But Pat seems intent on making some signature statement or legislative hallmark for political purposes. Rather than what his constituents actually want.

  4. If Toomey thinks gun control and amnesty are winning issues for him in 2016, he is a fool. The conservatives who elected him will stay home.He has totally lost touch with the voters.
