Toomey Begins Work with Budget Blueprint Committee

Senator Pat Toomey may be experiencing what Yogi Berra once called deja vu all over again. Later this week, the Senator will be serving on the congressional conference committee formed after the end of the government shutdown as they meet for the first time to try to create a budget.

As part of the deal to end the government shutdown, Congress and the President agreed to form a conference committee comprised of House and Senate members that would be tasked with creating a budget framework by December 13th. The hope is that with their work, Congress will be able to pass a budget, or at least another continuing resolution, before the government runs out of money again on January 15th.

If this sounds familiar, that’s because it’s almost the exact same thing Congress tried two years ago with its vaunted “super-committee.” Sen. Toomey also served on that committee, whose worked ultimately went nowhere.

This committee will be led by Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington and Republican Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. It will consist of 29 members of Congress, including Democrats and Republicans from both houses of Congress.

In addition to his experience with the “super-committee”, Senator Toomey also serves on the Senate Budget Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee. Before he was elected to the Senate, Toomey was also President of the popular anti-tax group Club for Growth. As a result, the Senator has a wealth of experience with budget matters.
