Toomey Committee Assignments Play to His Strength: Crunching Numbers

Senator Toomey announced his committee assignments this afternoon, and there were few surprises.

Toomey will serve on the Banking; Budget; Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Joint Economic committees in the 112th Congress. Hay may be just a freshman, but PoliticsPA thinks it’s a matter of weeks until he begins shaping GOP policy. Tops.

Here’s the release:

SENATOR TOOMEY ANNOUNCES COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced today that he will be a member of the Banking; Budget; Commerce, Science and Transportation; and Joint Economic committees in the 112th Congress. The Senate Republican Conference approved these committee assignments today.

“I am pleased and honored to join these distinguished committees. These assignments help ensure that our state is well represented in the Senate. In addition, they will enable me to advance my two priorities – encouraging economic growth and job creation and returning fiscal responsibility to our government.

“The Senate Banking Committee oversees the regulation of the financial services sector from small community banks to brokerage firms to the large government-sponsored entities such as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, among others. Financial services companies employ more than 250,000 people in our state, and they provide credit and other resources necessary to keep our businesses, including our small businesses, growing. With my financial background and prior service on the House Banking Committee, I will hit the ground running.

“The Senate Budget Committee is in charge of one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress – establishing our federal budget. Our huge deficits and mounting debt are undeniable evidence that federal spending has been out-of-control. I intend to use my position on the Budget Committee to help return our government to fiscal responsibility.

“The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has jurisdiction over many parts of the federal government that affect the lives of Pennsylvanians across the state. It oversees the Federal Communications Commission which has broad regulatory powers over several large employers in our state,” Sen. Toomey said. “The committee also has a leading role in aviation, railroads, and other transportation matters that are the critical backbone to our economy. I will work to ensure the government can play a constructive role in allowing commerce to prosper and expand.”

“The Joint Economic Committee is comprised of Republicans and Democrats from the House and the Senate, responsible for evaluating the economic impact of federal legislation.”
