As President Joe Biden continues to promote his infrastructure proposal, he will meet with Sen. Pat Toomey and several other GOP Senators this week to discuss the matter.
According to a press release from the White House, Biden will meet with Toomey and Sens. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), John Barrasso (R-WY), Roy Blunt (R-MO), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) to talk “about the best ways to invest in American infrastructure.”
Toomey’s office confirmed to PoliticsPA that the Pennsylvania Republican will be meeting at the White House on Thursday with Biden.
“Senator Toomey plans to attend the meeting at the White House on Thursday,” a spokesperson from Toomey’s office said to PoliticsPA. “And as he has noted previously, if President Biden is willing to work with Republicans, he believes there will be more than 10 Republicans that will work with him.”
In late March, Biden unveiled his $2 trillion infrastructure plan. While Sen. Bob Casey and other Democrats have largely rallied around the American Jobs Plan, Republicans have been united in their opposition to the proposal.
In response to Biden’s infrastructure plan, Toomey, along with several other GOP Senators, released a $568 billion infrastructure proposal in April, touting it as “the largest infrastructure investment that Republicans have ever put forth.”
POLITICO reported on Monday morning that Biden’s upcoming meeting on Thursday is a part of the White House’s “most concerted push yet to find a middle ground with Republicans on the president’s massive infrastructure proposal,” adding that the White House viewed the GOP infrastructure counteroffer, which Toomey signed onto, as a “constructive step towards a bipartisan deal.”
