President Donald Trump will join Congressional Republicans this week in Philadelphia as they gather for their annual retreat as they gather at the Loews Hotel in Center City. The event is held in a different location each year.

The gathering of both Senate and House Republicans will give the leadership and members a chance to build their legislative agenda and plan the coming session where they hold majorities in both chambers.  This is the first time Republicans have controlled both branches and the presidency since the 2006 election.

The main topics of discussion are believed to be the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and plans for a replacement, as well as who Trump will nominate to fill the the Supreme Court left vacant since Justice Antonin Scalia’s death.

Trump has made public a list of judges who he would choose from to place on the Supreme Court, including Pittsburgh-based federal judge Thomas Hardiman.

According to Jonathan Tamari at the Philadelphia Inquirer, Trump is not the only world leader on the agenda.  British Prime Minister Theresa May is also slated to speak to the gathering.

Several Philadelphia organizations are preparing to protest.

According to Philadelphia Magazine, the Center for Popular Democracy are planning a march on Thursday.  Black Lives Matter Pennsylvania and Philly Socialists are planning to surround the Hotel on Thursday as well.

“Trump’s historic unpopularity and the lack of reasonable Republican policies to create jobs and improve health care is a sad indication that the next four years will be defined by broken promises and missed opportunities to move our country forward,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesman Preston Maddock.
