Two Endorsements and a Side of Policy

Chris Carney
Chris Carney

State Representative Patty Kim endorsed Katie McGinty for governor, former Congressman Chris Carney threw his support behind fellow former Congressman Mark Critz for lieutenant governor and Tom Wolf touted his own “Made in America” manufacturing plan.

Ladies first: Kim applauded McGinty’s practical, bipartisan approach to governance in her press release announcing her endorsement. “I appreciate that Katie McGinty is not an ideologue, but a pragmatic problem solver. When she was DEP Secretary, Katie McGinty demonstrated an ability to bring opposing sides together to improve our economy and bring thousands of badly needed jobs to Pennsylvania, I am confident she will do the same as governor,” said Kim.

Other McGinty endorsements include State Representatives Tony DeLuca (D-Allegheny) and Peter J. Daley (D-Fayette), Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85, Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council President Pat Gillespie and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin.

While Carney was rumored to be considering his own bid for the LG’s office, he ultimately decided to support Critz for the office instead. Earlier this year, there was some polling done in PA-11 on how Carney would fare against incumbent Lou Barletta (R-Luzerne). A source close to Carney told PoliticsPA months ago that he was weighing the choice between LG and Congress. Now that he’s officially ruled out LG with his endorsement of Critz, one may begin to wonder whether Barletta now has a challenger. The Carney endorsement may bolster the Critz campaign that only has one other major endorsement, United Steelworkers.

The Tom Wolf campaign released their manufacturing plan today, entitled “Made in America.” The major tenets include providing business incentives to companies that create middle-class jobs and improving vocational education in all high schools in the state.

In his release, Wolf clearly stakes out business and employment as his bailiwick.

“All of my company’s products are manufactured in the United States, and both the headquarters and distribution center are located right here in Pennsylvania,” he said.

This plan may resonate with many working Pennsylvanians, as manufacturing is the third largest industry in the state, encompassing 10 percent of total employment in the state.

“As the owner of a home products company, I know that American manufacturing has a bright future,” said Wolf “But for Pennsylvania to lead the way, it’s going to take a leader who knows how to both change Harrisburg and create family-sustaining jobs — and that’s what I plan to do.”

Here’s the full plan.
