No wonder all these people have been positioning themselves to run for Governor in 2014! Pennsylvania’s chief executive is the highest-paid in the nation, according to a California study.
The Los Angeles Times reported on the national list. It was compiled by the California Citizens Compensation Commission as part of a process to determine whether Gov. Jerry Brown should get a raise or a pay decrease.
Here are the top 7 in the country, compiled in 2012.
Pennsylvania: $183,255
New York: $179,000
Illinois and Michigan: $177,000
Virginia and New Jersey: $175,000
California: $173,000
But don’t feel left out, state legislators! The same panel found that Pa. lawmakers’ base pay was 2nd highest in the nation at $82,026, behind only California (at $95,291).
Update: as WITF’s Mary Wilson notes:
Gov. Corbett has said his pay is actually closer to the salaries of those governors. He vowed to accept no more than the salary in place at the time he was elected in 2010 — $174,914.
The Patriot-News reported this year that if he’s returning the automatic pay raises to the state treasurer, it’s not apparent on pay stubs.

I found the legislators’ salaries to be more objectionable than the governors since Pennsylvania also has the distinction of having the largest legislature in the US (203 house, 50 Senate). I’ll make a deal with them. Half the number of legislators or cut their salary by half. Problem is their salaries just the beginning of what a legislators office costs.
I agree with Mak. Not to mention the $350,000 he took in campaign money from his current DCED Secretary. I am betting there is more than just Shale Graft. After all, the Secretary is a coal mogul.
This is why we need ROB Gleason to run at the top of GOP ticket! He’ll work for free if the state will name him broker of record and he will bring with him his entire energetic family, at least those not involved in the lucrative wine distribution business.
I wonder if Bruce Castor would be willing to do the job for free?
