Wild Wins the 7th District

Another pickup for the Democrats.

Democratic candidate Susan Wild wins the newly drawn 7th district seat by defeating Republican Marty Nothstein.

She had a 20 point lead with 22% of precincts reporting when national news outlets called the race. Wild finished with a 54-43 victory with 99% of the precincts reported.

She and Nothstein are also on the ballot in a special election that took place today to represent the 15th district previously represented by Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Lehigh).

A significant majority of the newly drawn district was previously represented by Dent, a well known moderate Republican who vacated his seat earlier this year. That term runs from November through early January.

Wild used the topic of covering pre-existing conditions as a main driving force behind her candidacy, while Nothstein touted the current state of the economy and the GOP tax reform bill as helping those in the district.

Wild significantly outraised Nothstein throughout the campaign, although the GOP candidate blames outside money for putting her in that position.

Wild entered the final weeks of the campaign as the steady favorite, although the district is rather moderate.

Democrats nationally viewed this as a seat they expected to win and needed if they are going to retain control of the House.

  1. I was stunned by the size of the victory. Even with the new map, I never thought she would win by that much. Clearly the Hispanic people turned out.
