Wolf Polling Memo Singles Out McCord

The Democratic primary for Governor has thus far operated along one overarching dynamic: Allyson Schwartz is the frontrunner, and the other candidates are competing to be the most viable alternative.

A polling memo from Tom Wolf’s campaign seems to validate that paradigm. In it, Wolf’s pollster takes specific aim at state Treasurer Rob McCord.

“Surprisingly Limited Appeal for Rob McCord” write the memo’s author, polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research.

“While he is the only statewide office holder running, just 27 percent recognize Rob McCord. McCord manages just 4 percent of the vote among registered Democrats in the Quinnipiac survey and just 7 percent of the vote among likely Democratic primary voters in the GQR survey.”

GQR also notes that Wolf and Schwartz were statistically tied after voters learned more information about both. The full memo is here.

The memo is dated August 5, and the polling is even older. But multiple Democrats confirm that the memo is still in regular rotation and being handed by Wolf’s campaign.

The sections dealing with McCord and Schwartz were not included in the publicly released version of the memo in April.

A source close to Wolf said the memo was not meant to target McCord, but instead to demonstrate that the primary race is wide open.

Wolf, of York, is the former Pa. Secretary of Revenue.
