Women’s Groups Split in PA AG Primary

EMILY’s List endorsed Kathleen Kane, the Pa. Chapter of the National Organization for Women backed Patrick Murphy.

The split comes as both candidates – Kane, a former assistant Lackawanna County District Attorney, and Murphy, a former Congressman from Bucks County – stake out positions on the controversial ultrasound mandate.

“We are thrilled to endorse Kathleen Kane for Attorney General in Pennsylvania today,” said Stephanie Schriock, President of EMILY’s List. “Kathleen is a strong pro-choice Democratic woman who has just the leadership and prosecutorial experience that Pennsylvania needs in an Attorney General.”

“In her time as an Assistant District Attorney specializing in cases of child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault and white collar crime, Kathleen has worked tirelessly to bring justice and security to all people. She is the advocate Pennsylvania needs to look out for women and families throughout the state. We are proud of the work Kathleen has done and the EMILY’s List community is excited to stand with her.”

EMILY’s List’s Political Opportunity Program (POP) helps pro-choice Democratic women run and win for state and local office. They’ve raised more than $38.5 million to support its mission of recruiting and supporting women candidates. They only endorse women, meaning that Murphy was not eligible for consideration.

Murphy picked up the backing of PA’s most prominent women’s rights groups, the state’s chapter of the National Organization for Women.

“A War on Women is being waged across the country, and unfortunately, it’s come here to Pennsylvania. Women across the Commonwealth need an advocate in the Attorney General’s office who will stand up and fight for them. Patrick Murphy is the only one in this race willing to do what’s necessary to protect our rights and ensure full equality under the law,” said Julia Ramsey, President of PA NOW.

I’ve always been proud to stand with PA NOW and other women’s organizations to protect a woman’s right to choose and fight for equality. I will continue to partner with PA NOW to defend women’s rights, end discrimination in the workplace and fight for equality. More than ever, we need to stand together and fight back against these vicious attacks on women’s rights,” Murphy said.

Editor’s note: We had initially reported the PA NOW endorsement in another post about President Bill Clinton’s upcoming rally for Kane. We thought it fit better here.

  1. NOW has shown that it upholds the principles of the women of Pennsylvania by endorsing the candidate they know will truly advocate best for their membership and all PA women.

Emily’s List does the women of Pennsylvania a disservice by excluding men from the possibility of endorsement regardless of qualities or qualifications.

NOW’s endorsement of Murphy speaks louder on the question of who is the best to represent all of Pennsylvania as AG.

  2. Well, Emily’s list only endorses women… so what is that worth?

To see the National Organization of Women endorsing Murphy over Kane speaks to just how much of a fighter Murphy will be for the women of Pennsylvania.

    Murphy is the man!
