12/7 Ups & Downs

It’s Pennsylvania Society weekend, and here’s who had a strong week on the way to New York City.

Bipartisanship. There are several valid criticisms of Pennsylvania Society. It’s fancy at a time when many people have it tough. It’s in New York when it could be helping the Pa. economy. But all the problems are outweighed by the essential good of Pa. Society: it brings politicos from both parties together. It lets folks get to know their opponents and helps prevent the kind of partisan gridlock that keeps DC from working.

Allyson Schwartz. If PoliticsPA had a ‘number of the week’ feature, it would be this: 3.1 million. That’s how much Schwartz has in her congressional campaign account today, money that could pass seamlessly into a campaign account for a run for Governor. That’s a possibility that got a shot in the arm on Friday when Schwartz added one of the Pa. Democrats’ top staffers to her operation.

Tom Corbett. The Governor enters New York City with a target on his back, as buzz swirls about people that might challenge him in 2014. The big new name is Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce Castor, a Republican. But Schwartz and Treasurer Rob McCord, too. And John Hanger. It’s going to make the cocktail conversation less than pleasant. That said, he’ll leave NYC with lots more campaign cash and likely have shored up support from key GOP backers.

Pittsburgh City Council. It’s not very often a historian gets to take his place in history, but Pittsburgh native and author David McCullough will. Council voted unanimously to rename the 16th street bridge after the Pulitzer Prize winner.
.

The tweet of the week goes to State Rep. Stephen Bloom (R-Cumberland), who preciptated a story in the Associated Press about Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming) soliciting money for incarcerated former Rep. Brett Feese.
