3/27 Ups & Downs

What’s crazier, an Abraham lead, a Gosselin candidacy or a GOP victory in Philly? There’s only one way to find out. See who made this week’s list!

Up Arrow1Down ArrowTom Wolf. The good news: Governor Wolf’s poll numbers are OK. The bad news: Governor Wolf’s poll numbers are just OK. Given the magnitude of his victory last November (especially considering the red tide he faced), one would expect Wolf to have more political capital. Perhaps it’s just not possible anymore for a politician to attract bipartisan support. Still, it would help his budget’s chances if the Governor had some more sway. Not to mention a nominee for Police Commissioner who isn’t embroiled in controversy.

Up ArrowMartina White. How does a Republican win in Philadelphia? Well, you have to catch a few breaks. These include getting a prime election date and turmoil within the Democratic Party that leads to an underwhelming opponent and a split among organized labor. Still, this is Philly we’re talking about. White ran a phenomenal campaign that showed in the election results. This will be a difficult seat to hold onto in the future (Seth Kaplan is probably already preparing for 2016) but Martina White might just be able to do it.

Down ArrowLynne Abraham. Yesterday, the ex-District Attorney released an internal poll showing her with a wide lead over her opponents. The problem? The only reason campaigns leak internal polls is because they sense they’re in trouble and are seeking to change the narrative. The Oliver campaign even went so far as to create their own fake internal poll to poke at Abraham’s tactic. The real issue, though, is that ever since Jim Kenney jumped into the race he has taken over the spot of alternative to frontrunner Anthony Williams. Abraham will need to come up with something to get back in the game.

Up Arrow1Jim Kenney. Speaking of Jim Kenney, the former Councilman seemingly has a new endorsement every day. Just in the last week, Kenney has won the backing of the SEIU, NOW, and PWF. On top of that, a second SuperPAC has launched a pro-Kenney TV ad. As a recent profile in Philadelphia Magazine points out, Kenney is steadily building a coalition of Center City progressives and union members to take on Anthony Williams and his base of black voters and business leaders. With Williams and Kenney emerging as legit contenders, suddenly the Philly mayoral race doesn’t seem so boring after all.

Down ArrowEd Rendell. This wasn’t the best of weeks for the former Governor. First, his efforts to push Sarah Del Ricci over the finish line in the HD-170 special election were for naught. Then, a much more serious problem emerge when Politico Magazine reported Gov. Rendell was among those who were shown favoritism by the Department of Homeland Security. Rendell vigorously denied the accusations although we’re sure he’ll be happy to put this week in the rearview mirror.

Down ArrowJon Gosselin. Yeah, we couldn’t believe it either.

The tweet of the week goes to the good folks over at Billy Penn for perfectly describing that unique phenomena known as the internal poll.

  1. Um, that should be “What’s craziest…” not “What’s crazier…” since there are more than two choices for the reader to ponder.

  2. ….you have to look at the White seat too. Sure it is “Philly” but it is not nearly as Democratic as you’d think. Anyone could have seen this….
