5/20 Ups & Downs

Philly Reformers. It all adds up: Stephanie Singer’s historic defeat of City Commissioner Marge Tartaglione, Republican voters’ rejection of Frank Rizzo, Al Schmidt’s success in getting on the ballot, and John Featherman’s performance in the mayoral primary, and the other freshmen Philly Councilmembers. If campaign promises of reform and transparency are kept, it will be a new era in the City of Brotherly Love.

Mike Doyle. The Democratic congressman from Forest Hills stuck with Rich Fitzgerald when polls suggested the race was lost and through the embarrassing Marcellus Shale email fiasco. Fitzgerald’s upset victory last Tuesday was also a win for Congressman Doyle, whose status as a power broker in the southwestern part of the state is solidified.
.

John Dougherty. The leader of IBEW local 98 flexed his muscles on Tuesday. His right-hand man, Bobby Henon, romped to victory in District 6. Mark Squilla took District 1. And a few at-large candidates on the Democratic ballot owe spots to him. Several incoming members of next year’s city council will have Doc to thank.
.

PA GOP. With three direct mail pieces and a Tom Corbett robocall, the party showed what an endorsement is worth. They built on their 88 percent success rate with convincing wins by Anne Covey and Vic Stabile on Tuesday. Now they’re taking the show on the road.
.
.

PA Dems. With Kathryn Boockvar’s apparent win for Commonwealth Court, the party recovered from a string of broken endorsements. Apparently emails from Jim Burn have an impact, after all.
.
.
.

Mark Harris. Harris followed up his work on Pat Toomey’s successful U.S. Senate campaign with an equally professional, efficient effort in Allegheny County, guiding D. Raja to a convincing victory on Tuesday.  The decision not to go negative on Chuck McCullough, whose campaign was dogged by a lack of money and a pending criminal trial, was vindicated by the voters.
.

Eli Avila. We wanted this to be an all election Ups & Downs, we really did. But we couldn’t just let this go. The newly minted Secretary of Health has egg on his face. He apparently reported a Harrisburg Dinar after an argument with its owner. As PA Public Radio’s Scott Detrow quipped, yelling “I am the secretary of health!” at a diner owner is just about on the same level as yelling, I drive a Dodge Stratus! at a family dinner.
