10/12 Morning Buzz

More polls (if it’s possible) on the Presidential race and U.S. Senate. And Gary Johnson is on the PA ballot. Good morning politicos, here’s the Buzz.

Don’t forget to check back later for the Ups & Downs.

Presidential

Inquirer Poll: Obama 50, Romney 42: President Obama has weathered Mitt Romney’s bounce, according to the latest poll from the Philadelphia Inquirer. He leads Romney by 8 points, just slightly narrower than 11 point lead he had in a poll commissioned by the newspaper in mid-September.

Libertarian Candidate Johnson to Remain on Ballot: After a long legal battle, Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson succeeded in his attempt to get on the ballot this November. The Pa Commonwealth Court ruled that he had the necessary signatures to be eligible, though the matter has for some time been in dispute.

U.S. Senate

Why Neither Bob Casey Nor Tom Smith Want a Debate. The short answer: because Smith isn’t articulate and Casey isn’t charismatic.

Rasmussen Poll: Casey 49, Smith 45: Sen. Bob Casey leads Republican Tom Smith by 4 points according to the latest numbers from Rasmussen. That’s 3 points better than Smith did in the firm’s Sept. 19 poll, when he trailed Casey 49 percent to 42.

Smith Poll: Casey 46, Smith 44: Senate hopeful Tom Smith has released an internal poll showing him just 2 points behind Sen. Bob Casey.

Emotional New Casey Ad Highlights Advocacy for Troops (Watch Video): Sen. Bob Casey’s newest ad presents the touching story of a mom who lost her son in Iraq; not during combat, but as a result of faulty electrical wiring at his base. When he heard about it, Casey took the lead on the issue and helped enact tougher standards for U.S. military contractors.

Statewide

Diana Irey Vaughan Gets Serious: How do you make a case against an incumbent when most people don’t know his job description? Diana Irey Vaughan, the Republican hoping to unseat Pa. Treasurer Rob McCord, unveiled a policy platform Thursday.

Court Loosens Another Pa. Ballot Petition Rule: The Pa. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a signature to get a candidate on the ballot still counts, even if the person signing neglects to write the year.

Congressional

Trivedi: $433K Raised in Q3: Democratic challenger Manan Trivedi raised $433,000 in the third quarter, he told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Critz, Rothfus Tangle in Beaver Co Debate: It was brief, but all eyes were on Congressman Mark Critz and Republican hopeful Keith Rothfus in their first debate at Penn State-Beaver.

AFL-CIO Mailers Boost Critz, Boockvar, Trivedi: The Pa. AFL-CIO is hoping to bring into the fold its members who may be inclined to vote for a Republican for Congress next month. Mailers went out to about 10,000 union members in PA-6, PA-8 and PA-12.

Legislative Election Updates:

SD-37: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorsed Rep. Matt Smith in this competitive Senate race. His handle on the issues is stronger than Raja’s, the paper’s ed board said.

SD-47: The Beaver County Times looks as the debate between Sen. Elder Vogel (R-Beaver) and Dem challenger Kim Villella.

HD-43: Couldn’t make it to the debate for the seat of outgoing Rep. Scott Boyd (R-Lancaster)? No worries, David O’Connor has you covered. Republican Keith Greiner, 47, of Leola, and Democrat John Weigel, 53, of Lampeter, faced each other in a candidates’ forum Wednesday evening.

HD-159: The PA Independent also takes a look at charges by Jay Schiliro that Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland (D-Delco) acted unethically. Probably no laws broken, is essentially the conclusion, but evidence that the system could use some reform. The Delco Times reports Kirkland held a press conference in the church where he is pastor, and called his opponent “demonic.”
