Taking the stage in Charlotte Thursday evening, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter wasted little time laying into Mitt Romney. He talked about the Republican presidential hopeful’s ill-fated visit to a Philly school in May.

“He recently visited a school in west Philly. Told teachers he knows more than they do about what works for their students,” said Nutter. “He said class size doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter? If our teachers can’t give our children the attention they need, that doesn’t matter?  If our students spend the day on their feet, or the floor, because there aren’t enough desks in a crowded classroom, that doesn’t matter?”

For months, Nutter has been a vocal surrogate for the President’s campaign. He also took lumps when it was revealed that the City of Philadelphia, not a campaign, was paying for his trip to Charlotte and that of his staffers.

“To Mitt Romney, education is a luxury. As governor, he vetoed universal pre-K. In his first year, K-12 schools saw drastic cuts that led to teacher layoffs.  He failed his students.”

Republicans said that the man Nutter advocated for has already failed.

“In Charlotte tonight we heard Mayor Nutter advocate for four more years of the same failed Democrat policies that have left Philadelphia with 11.6 percent unemployment,” said RNC Spokesman Ted Kwong. “Pennsylvanians are concerned about the future of our country and have had enough of Democrats pointing fingers and casting blame.  They’re ready for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan who will encourage small business growth, strengthen the middle class and get our economy back on track.”
