Ad Spending Tops $300M In PA


Haven’t been able to escape this cycle’s political ads, have you?

Turn on your TV … they’re there. Turn on your computer … they’re there. Ads, ads, everywhere.

And now we know why.

According to AdImpact, Pennsylvania has seen $301 million in 2022 general election spending as of Tuesday.

That breaks down as follows: $167M for the Senate race, $57M for the governor’s race, $25M in PA-07, $19 in PA-08, $17M in PA-17, and just $16M for everyone else.

The chase for Pat Toomey’s Senate seat between John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz is currently the sixth-most expensive Senate election ever and only trails Georgia’s Senate race between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker in this cycle. Georgia has seen $260M dropped in primary and general spending, while Pennsylvania comes in second at $249M.

With three weeks remaining … there is more on the horizon. Democrats have allocated $30M to the cause, while the GOP is putting $19M in future reservations.

And that’s just Senate spending. Pennsylvania has the sixth-most expensive gubernatorial general in the country, trailing Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada and Florida at $57 million.

AdImpact notes that 68 percent of all general spending and reservations have been placed by Democrat Josh Shapiro’s campaign, as the Attorney General is spending 42 times that of Doug Mastriano, his Republican opponent. The raw numbers: Shapiro $39M, Mastriano $920,000.

Not to be outdone are the races for the U.S. House of Representatives, as the Keystone State has two of the nine most expensive races for Congress – PA07 and PA08. The Lehigh Valley race between incumbent Democrat Susan Wild and Republican Lisa Scheller has seen $24M dropped to date, while the Matt Cartwright-Jim Bognet battle in the northeast corner has seen $19.2M allocated.

While TV viewers may feel they are getting the short stick during this campaign season, TV stations are rolling in the dough. The Philadelphia market has seen $120 million spent thus far, while Pittsburgh is second at $61M. Wilkes-Barre-Scranton ($35M) and Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York ($25M) also crossed the $25 million mark in ad spending.
