santorumFormer U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has formally endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett, another sign the GOP front-runner has locked up nearly all the support from his party’s establishment.

“Tom Corbett is the kind of common sense conservative that will bring fiscal responsibility and job creating policies that will improve the quality of life for all Pennsylvanians,” Santorum told PoliticsPA.  “He is an ethical principled leader who as Attorney General has taken on corruption at the highest level of government and didn’t blink.”

The story was first reported by GrassrootsPA, which posted a letter from Santorum asking voters to contribute to Corbett’s campaign. The Corbett campaign confirmed the letter’s authenticity to PoliticsPA.

“With public confidence in our Democratic Governor Ed Rendell and legislature near historic lows, Tom’s campaign for governor could not come at a more critical time,” Santorum wrote. “After all, there is no margin for error when it comes to rectifying the enormous problems Pennsylvania faces today.”

Attorney General Corbett has received endorsements from former Governors Tom Ridge, Mark Schweiker, and Dick Thornburgh; Allegheny County GOP Chairman Jim Roddey; and former gubernatorial opponent Pat Meehan. He also has the backing of many party insiders, such as Republican power-broker Bob Asher.

The timing of Tuesday’s news might irk some conservatives because it coincides with state Rep. Sam Rohrer’s formal declaration for governor. Rohrer is popular among many conservatives.

Corbett will face the state lawmaker and U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach for the Republican nomination.
