Casey and Toomey Vote to Convict Trump

On Saturday, Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey voted to convict former President Donald Trump on the charge of “incitement of insurrection” over the January 6 riots in Washington D.C.

Although the Senate ultimately voted to acquit Trump, all 50 Democrats in the Senate voted to convict Trump, while Toomey was one of seven Republicans to find the former President “guilty” in this impeachment trial.

“He urged the mob to march on the Capitol for the explicit purpose of preventing Congress and the Vice President from formally certifying the results of the presidential election. All of this to hold on to power despite having legitimately lost,” Toomey wrote in part of a thread of tweets on Saturday afternoon. “As a result of President Trump’s actions, for the first time in American history, the transfer of presidential power was not peaceful.”

“I was one of the 74 million Americans who voted for President Trump, in part because of the many accomplishments of his administration. Unfortunately, his behavior after the election betrayed the confidence millions of us placed in him,” Toomey continued in the thread of tweets. “His betrayal of the Constitution and his oath of office required conviction.”

“After repeatedly failing to overturn the election, the former President summoned his mob of insurrectionists to Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021 for one more attack on American democracy. He invited them. He incited them,” Casey wrote in part of a thread of tweets explaining his vote to convict.

“The former President attacked the foundational principles of our democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. He violated his oath of office and he committed a high crime against our Constitution,” Casey continued later in his statement. “I voted to convict the former President in the most bipartisan presidential impeachment proceedings in our Nation’s history.”

Although both Senators from Pennsylvania voted to convict Trump, the Pennsylvania Democratic and Republican Party offered different responses to the acquittal of Trump.

Toomey, who is retiring in 2022, faced criticism from the PA GOP over his vote as they celebrated Trump’s acquittal.

“This post-presidency impeachment proceeding was an unconstitutional theft of time and energy that did absolutely nothing to unify or help the American people,” PA GOP Chairman Lawrence Tabas wrote in a statement. “It served only to divert attention from the Biden Administration’s radical agenda, which is destroying millions of good-paying jobs across America.”

“I share the disappointment of many of our grassroots leaders and volunteers over Senator Toomey’s vote today,” Tabas continued. “The vote to acquit was the constitutionally correct outcome.”

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party slammed Republicans who didn’t vote to convict Trump.

“That the Congress fell short of Donald Trump’s conviction is not a sign of his innocence, but of Republican leaders’ great moral cowardice,” the Pennsylvania Democratic Party wrote in a tweet. “The fight for democracy didn’t end at noon on January 20th. It continues as long as today’s Republican Party has even a fooothold of power.”

  1. Casey did it because he is a coward. Toomey is a traitor who is a RINO serving in the Senate. These are the lease votes they have ever taken with no respect for truth and justice. They were the leaders of the moral cowards of the Senate. Disgraceful and they both betrayed this nation and their oaths of office.

    1. Sorry, my autistic son was typing on my account for a few days everyone! fuck casey and toomey and thank god both my senators will be voted out of office soon!

  2. Toomey makes one good vote in his senate career, knowing that it wouldn’t change the outcome, and that he wasn’t the deciding vote.

Still… better than Mitch “The Turdle” McConnell

  3. Casey did it because he is a Dem; Toomey because he was no longer planning to stay in the Senate. Hardly courageous to vote for truth and justice. But at least they were not the moral cowards of most of GOP Senate. Disgraceful betrayal of this nation and their oaths of office.
