Challenger Stephanie Singer Poised to Earn Democratic Nomination in Philly City Commissioners Race

By John McDonald, PoliticsPA Contributor

City Commission candidate Stephanie Singer has long been critical of the City of Philadelphia’s inability to maintain a public online database of election results.

As of Tuesday night, it appears she’ll have at least four years to bring the City’s E-Day technological savvy up to speed.

With 95 percent of City divisions reporting, Singer leads the seven-candidate Democratic field with 19.6 percent of the vote (36,828 votes).

The top two vote-getters from each party will square off in November’s general election.  From there, the top three candidates will comprise the three-member City Commissioners board for the next four years.  Given the Democrats’ immense advantage in voter registration and enthusiasm in Philadelphia, the party’s candidates are virtually assured to be elected in November.

Perhaps more startling than Singer’s surge to the front of the pack was the seemingly abrupt end to longtime commissioner Marge Tartaglione’s nine-term run on the commission.  As of this writing, Tartaglione, whose controversial career reached a fever pitch over the last year, had won just 16.1 percent of the vote (30,128 votes).  Fellow Democratic incumbent Anthony Clark was besting her, earning 16.6 percent (31,093 votes) and likely the chance to run in November’s general election as well.

Earlier on Election Day – before the polls closed – Tartaglione told Newsworks’ Dave Davies that 2011 would be her last election.  When asked why, she responded: “Politics has changed.  People shake your hand, pat you on the back, then you turn around and see a knife in your back.”

On the Republican side, incumbent Joseph Duda and challenger Al Schmidt, a former City Controller candidate, will compete in November for the commission seat reserved for the minority party.  Each earned roughly 35 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s primary (roughly 9,200 votes each).

  1. Hats off to Al Schimdt for making a strong stand against Joe Duda. Could be curtins for Joe. Will the LO and the RCC call a truce and share lest they both disappear? Or Will the PaGOP let ’em fight it out and merge the two after the battles are done??

  2. Stephanie kicked Marge’s sorry old ass.

As for “politics change”, YES MARGE people are now looking for accountability, transparency and people that actually show up for work.
