Chester County: Who’s Running For Office?

We continue our series on the candidates in Pennsylvania’s county races.

Today, we take a look at the candidates for office in Chester County.

County Commissioner

The three-member Board of Commissioners constitutes the chief governing body of the county. The board, together with its executive staff, manages a large and diverse organization whose mission is to provide quality government services in an efficient, cost effective manner. Elected every four years, the commissioners are responsible for policy making, fiscal management, and the administration of county affairs.

District Attorney

The Chester County District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer for the county. Within the county, we have over 50 law enforcement agencies working together, including municipal police departments, the Pennsylvania State Police, federal agencies, and the Chester County Detectives.

Sheriff

The Sheriff is the highest ranking law enforcement officer in the county. The Office of the Sheriff is mandated by the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Sheriff is an independent elected official with law enforcement responsibilities as well as civil and criminal court duties.

Prothonotary

The Prothonotary is the elected civil clerk of the Court of Common Pleas and is responsible for recording all civil procedures before the court. This official signs and seals all writs and processes numerous other documents of the Court of Common Pleas.

Recorder of Deeds

The Recorder of Deeds is the custodian of all records and indexes relating to land transactions and is required to archive those records. In addition, the Recorder of Deeds is responsible for administering oaths and recording the commissions of notaries public.

Register of Wills

The Register of Wills is responsible for probating wills and granting letter of administration in cases where persons die without leaving a will. The register has jurisdiction over and maintains records of wills, inventory of estates, and other miscellaneous documents. The Register is the Commonwealth’s agent for the collection of the state inheritance tax.

Coroner

The Chester County Coroner’s Office is an independent agency serving the citizens and honoring the deceased of the county by investigating the facts and circumstances concerning jurisdictional deaths which have occurred within Chester County. We determine the cause and manner of death, the identity of the decedent, and provide notification to the legal next of kin, while exhibiting the highest degree of compassion, professionalism, and integrity.

Magisterial District Judge (MDJ) 

Magisterial District Court is the first level of judicial authority in Pennsylvania and is the court where most people experience the judicial system for the first time. Magisterial District Judges handle all traffic cases, minor criminal cases, and civil cases involving amounts up to $12,000. Magisterial District Judges also set bail and conduct preliminary hearings in misdemeanor and felony criminal cases to determine if the cases should be dismissed or transferred to the Court of Common Pleas for further proceedings.
