CNN: PA Senate Seat Stays as Most Likely To Flip In Latest 2022 Ratings

For the third month in a row, Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seat remains the most likely to flip partisan control in 2022, according to this national outlet.

According to CNN, Pennsylvania is still listed as the Senate seat that is most likely to flip parties in the 2022 election in it’s latest Top 10 rankings released on May 27. Pennsylvania debuted as the most likely seat to flip by CNN in its inaugural rankings released on March 3 and also was #1 in the April 21 ratings update

CNN’s Simonth Pathe once again leads off the analysis by referencing Pennsylvania’s race being an open seat in 2022 in a state that Joe Biden flipped in the most recent presidential election.

However, Pathe notes that the “primary fields on both sides are still in flux” and provides an update that Sean Parnell, a verteran who lost to Rep. Conor Lamb (D-Allegheny) in 2020, joined the GOP race, while Lamb also “could launch a Senate bid” on the Democratic side.

The lone Republican candidates mentioned by name in the analysis are Jeff Bartos, a Montgomery County real estate developer and former Lt. Governor candidate, and Parnell.

Although Biden bested Donald Trump in the Keystone State in 2020, Pathe writes that “Trump loyalty is a salient factor in the GOP primary,” and adds that Parnell is being backed by Donald Trump Jr. and since he was supported by the GOP President in his 2020 congressional run, which means he “may occupy a Trumpier lane than Bartos.”

However, Bartos has taken shots at Parnell’s old tweets from the 2016 presidential primary which criticize Trump and he mentioned the former GOP president by name in his announcement video.

While Bartos and Parnell are the highest profile names to enter the GOP race to succeed outgoing GOP Sen. Pat Toomey thus far and the only candidates mentioned by name in the CNN article, there are several other candidates that have declared their intentions to seek the party nomination.

Sean Gale, an attorney, Everett Stern, a businessman and HSBC whistleblower, and Kathy Barnette, a veteran and conservative commentator who was the GOP nominee for Pennsylvania’s 4th Congressional District in 2020, are also in the GOP race. According to the FEC, James Edward Hayes, John Debellis, Martin Rosenfeld, and Robert Jeffries have also filed statements of candidacy.

Other Republicans that have previously been reported as interested in seeking the GOP nomination according to Politico include, former Congressman Ryan Costello (R-Chester), former Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite, former gubernatorial candidate Paul Mango, former U.S. Ambassador Carla Sands, and business consultant Craig Snyder.

Pathe writes that the Democratic field is “crowded” and specifically mentions Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia), and Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh being in the race, while “a handful of other state and federal elected officials” are still “looking at the race.”

Although Fetterman leads the way in fundraising thus far, Pathe reports that “Republicans like their odds” against him, but adds that “the list of candidates trying to replace Toomey may keep growing, so expect plenty of drama in this top-tier race before we even get to the general election.”

While Arkoosh, Fetterman, Kenyatta, and Lamb are mentioned by name in the CNN rankings, there are several other Democrat that have formally joined the race and several that are still weighing a run.

Former Norristown Borough Council President John McGuigan, and Dr. Kevin Baumlin have both launched their campaigns for Senate. State Sen. Sharif Street (D-Philadelphia) filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission for U.S. Senate and formally announced his exploratory committee in April.

According to the FEC website, Brandaun Dean, Larry Johnson, Alexandria Khalil, Kyle Norton, and Alan Shank have also filed statements of candidacy for the Democratic primary.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, other potential Democratic candidates include Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-Montgomery) Chrissy Houlahan (D-Chester), and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

In addition to CNN, other national ratings outlets place Pennsylvania’s Senate race in a category that indicates the seat is up for grabs in 2022.

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated Pennsylvania’s Senate race in 2022 as the lone Toss Up of the cycle in its initial ratings, the Cook Political Report listed Pennsylvania’s race as one of two states that are considered to be Toss Ups, and Inside Elections labels the Keystone State as a “Battleground” for the 2022 Senate election.

  1. Fetterman needs to make it through a competitive primary. Don’t under estimate Kenyatta. GOP have some reasonable candidates with conservative credentials and suburban appeal. This isn’t over until its over!

    1. Kenyatta is a loser with zero record. “I’m poor black and gay, so I deserve to be a Senator!”

  2. Fetterman is a success story for Dems. The leadership of the Dems in the state aside from Governor in areas like the Dem State Senate leadership is hapless.

  3. Now if the PA Democrats just start paying attention to local and legislative races, they can be a dominant party again.

  4. Any Democrat will do!as he or she is committed to working for all Pennsylvanians. We need to break this one-party system in PA. Republicans know they can’t win general elections unless gerrymandering or passing voter suppression laws. Which Pennsylvanians have benefited from this chokehold by republicans? PA lobbyists and big corporations. Certainly not homeowners, nor the working middle class, not even children. Only PA has a state government that runs liquor sales, the highest gas tax in the country, and highest paid congress as well. Our taxes are being handed over to politicians, not invested in our Commonwealth.

    1. What one party system? Dems have AGs office, Government Office, and PA Supreme Court.

      1. Democratic Party. The GOP/GQP is a criminal cult, not a political party.

          1. yah all libs are cannibals!! that’s our winning message in 2022! cant wait for the donald mothership to take us to nirvana

    2. Beverly Centini-

You are correct that Republican can’t win with fair districting and good voter access.
There are other states governments that run liquor sales besides PA.
Congressional salaries are the same for all states.
Our state legislature is so bad that it would be overpaid if paid PA’s minimum wage.
