Cook Report Downgrades Fitzpatrick After Shutdown

Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Bucks) has taken a hit from the 16-day government shutdown.

According to the national political prognosticators at the Cook Political Report, PA-8 has become more competitive – along with 13 other Republican districts across the country

Here’s what Cook wrote:

PA-08: Mike Fitzpatrick (R) – Southeast: Bucks County
Lean Republican. Bucks County is exactly the kind of suburbia where the GOP’s national image problems could cause down-ballot headaches. Even though Fitzpatrick was one of 20 House Republicans to sign on to a “clean CR” and was one of 87 who voted to reopen the government, it was only seven years ago that he lost in the Democratic wave of 2006. He still has the edge, but Democrats are excited about Iraq and Afghanistan veteran Kevin Strouse, particularly if he can get past the Democratic primary.

Fitzpatrick mostly stuck with the GOP party line during the shutdown. He said he supported a ‘clean’ resolution to reopen the government from day one, but at no point voted against House Speaker John Boehner. They both voted against a majority of the House GOP this week for the bipartisan measure to end the shutdown.

His Democratic challengers seized the opportunity and hammered Fitzpatrick for not doing more to forge a compromise. Kevin Strouse and Shaughnessy Naughton both took turns calling him a hypocrite and equating him with the Tea Party.

A poll commissioned last week by the liberal group MoveOn.org showed Fitzpatrick losing to a generic Democrat.

It’s clear Fitzpatrick knows he’s a top Democratic target in 2014. He pulled in a major Q3 fundraising haul, and has over $1 million cash on hand.

  1. For balance, two points are of-interest.

First, the 2012 wasn’t “dirty” and, second, Mike is quite-aware that his right-flank isn’t secure.

The latter issue will be addressed during a meeting of the leaders of the Conservative organizations in the 8th District, Tuesday-p.m.
