Cook Report Moves 2014 Gov Race From Lean R to Toss Up

Tom Corbett portrait loresThe Cook Political Report, which analyzes and handicaps elections nationwide, today moved its rating of the 2014 Pennsylvania Governor’s race from “Lean Republican” to “Toss Up.”

It’s a reflection of Gov. Tom Corbett’s ongoing problem with bad polling numbers as well as the recent emergence of several serious potential challengers – most notably U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz.

Update: While Cook didn’t publish a detailed explanation of its rating change, Senior Editor Jennifer Duffy told this to PoliticsPA:

“I considered two factors: the quality of the opposition lining up to
challenge Corbett, and the consistency of the polling data (not just
on ballot tests, but job performance, approval and re-elect).”

Joining Corbett on the danger list is Florida Gov. Rick Scott. Virginia’s governorship, which goes to voters in 2013, is the other GOP-held seat in the toss up column. The Democratic incumbent in Arkansas and independent Lincoln Chafee in Rhode Island are also listed as toss ups.

  1. ABC ABC The ides of March has past but Governor Corbett watch the Knights of your Round Table very closely. It won’t be long before PAGOP Rob Gleason heroically steps up to save our Commonwealth from the unimaginable prospects of a Democratic Governor. Chairman Gleason is a prolific Taker (just ask those duped donors), so maybe he turn some of the 47% into Elephants during his campaign.

  2. How is this a toss up when Corbett has lost every poll and has an approval rating of 30%?? Shouldn’t it lean Dem??

  3. that good news to beat tom Corbett. Corbett will go from governor mansion to jail house
