Corbett Still No. 1, Though Not In A Good Way

Tom Corbett upset
Gov. Tom Corbett

Governor Corbett was ranked number one by the Washington Post today, unfortunately it was in their rankings for most likely incumbent governor to lose re-election in 2014. The news shouldn’t come as a surprise to Corbett, however, as he was ranked first the last time that paper’s “The Fix” section ranked which governorships were most likely to switch parties.

“It’s tough being Gov. Tom Corbett (R) these days,” according to the Post. “Not only are his polling numbers lousy, Republicans in the state have been talking about finding a replacement for him, according to one report. Nothing has changed since our last round of rankings to suggest that Corbett is not the most endangered governor in the country.”

It’s been quite a great week for the Governor. First, there was the story of his staff shake-up. Then that news was overshadowed by revelations that he has a vacation home in South Carolina that he didn’t disclose and that his “drug gaffe” last April occurred in an interview in which his staff had already vetted the questions.

Not all is lost, though, for the Governor. He still has roughly fifteen months until the election. It appears he will face no primary challengers while his Democratic opponents will have to fight it out in the spring. And finally, the Washington Post doesn’t get to vote in PA elections.

The addition of new staff members shows Corbett knows he needs to make a course correction and that he is ready to battle. Whether he can win that battle, however, remains to be seen.

  1. PAINDY1 I enjoy your posts very much. I teach several children that live in poverty. What this administration has done to their education alone is criminal.

  2. This young woman did her job and, as a result, Jerry Sandusky is in jail. Would that all others involved had done what they were supposed to do. In my view, Tom Corbett is unelectable because of Sandusky. The first police report was in Clinton County November 2008. Apparently, it took until March 2009, 6 months, to get from Clinton County law enforcement to Centre County DA Madeira (I know his brother, Dave, who is very forthcoming but cannot explain the delay). Likely, the matter was investigated in Clinton County so that there was credible evidence presented to Centre County DA Madeira who, because of a conflict, immediately forwarded it to AG where it then took until November 2011, three years after the initial complaint. What took so long and how many investigators were assigned to this case. Some reports say only one State Trooper. That seems inadequate for a child molestation case but you are the DA.

Further, Tom Corbett has not been able to sell his greatest success, that is, enabling the expansion of Marcellus Shale drilling and production in Pennsylvania. Tom Corbett led in not hobbling growth of this gift to Pennsylvania. Democrats think the gas companies are too rich, and when it comes to taxes, too much is never enough. Tom Corbett leads on this issue but his messengers do not message effectively.

  3. Dear COS Gromis-Baker: Maybe Someone in the Brabender Administration needs to study those UPMC “Fear” Commercials. These spots are damn good. Scared the living hell out me. I can’t sleep at night. Very effective! I would hire the guy that produced those UPMC spots.
