Reactions from Keystone State Republicans and Democrats on 6-3 decision
What a week … and it’s not over yet. From the Supreme Court to the halls of Harrisburg, here are our Ups and Downs for June 26-30.
Big Day At Supreme Court. PA Budget Deadline Closes In. The Sunday Mail Decision. Battlefield Returns to Roots. Here is the Playbook
$100 million program provides taxpayer-funded scholarships to attend nonpublic schools
Compelling interests identified by colleges “cannot be subjected to meaningful judicial review”
Investment totals over $860M, benefitting 7,000 workers and retirees in PA manufacturing industry
Court rejected race-conscious admissions systems at Harvard, North Carolina
Unanimous decision involving Lancaster County mail carrier returned to lower courts for litigation
Foreign Policy for America Action Network backs Lehigh Valley Democrat for policy positions
The Supreme Court on Friday blocked the Biden administration’s student debt relief plan in a 6-3 decision, stopping more than 40 million borrowers from receiving loan forgiveness and delivering a major defeat to one of the president’s key campaign promises.
Here are some reactions from Pennsylvania’s delegation in Washington.
Our government has spent TRILLIONS to bail out the big banks and the CEOs who crashed our economy. Our government cancelled MILLIONS in pandemic loans for Members of Congress.
Yet SCOTUS is saying we cannot cancel some of the student loan debt for working people.
— Senator John Fetterman (@SenFettermanPA) June 30, 2023
Pennsylvanians should not have to foot the bill for other people’s loans. Today’s ruling is a victory for the rule of law and a blow to President Biden’s executive overreach. https://t.co/AbI8reYnYF

Last fall, friends & family gathered at our home to celebrate my daughter and her now-wife’s loving marriage.
Today, the conservative SCOTUS gave license to businesses to discriminate against them and other LGBTQ+ families.
I strongly oppose this anti-LGBTQ+ court’s ruling. https://t.co/EgApZ4wHzJ
— Chrissy Houlahan (@RepHoulahan) June 30, 2023
Biden’s ridiculous student loan forgiveness proposal was always unconstitutional.
Even Nancy Pelosi agreed.
I’m glad to see #SCOTUS reject Biden’s vote-buying scheme. https://t.co/hBXA1mw8VH

The Supreme Court struck down President Biden’s $400 billion student loan giveaway. The President does not have the Constitutional authority to spend money on his own. This ruling upholds Congress’s Power of the Purse. Congress must approve how taxpayer money is spent.
— Rep. Mike Kelly (@MikeKellyPA) June 30, 2023
Disappointed but not surprised.
We *know* that college is unaffordable for so many Americans, and we’re still fighting to fix it.
But in the meantime, there are people struggling under the enormous weight of loans. Student Loan Forgiveness would provide much-needed relief. https://t.co/dX8XDFFODH
— Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (@RepDean) June 30, 2023
Yet another horrible SCOTUS decision from a court that truly believes it is the one and only branch of government. We need to reform the Court now. https://t.co/HYrfAy4NjE
— US Rep Brendan Boyle (@RepBrendanBoyle) June 30, 2023
I agree with the SCOTUS decision to strike down POTUS’s unconstitutional debt bailout. Those who choose to take out loans should pay them back.
— Rep. Lloyd Smucker (@RepSmucker) June 30, 2023
Student loan forgiveness is nothing more than a transfer of wealth. The decision from SCOTUS reinforces what I have been saying all along – the President does not have the authority to force millions of hardworking Americans to foot the $400 billion bill.
— Glenn “GT” Thompson (@CongressmanGT) June 30, 2023
SCOTUS got it right — this ruling is a victory for the Constitution, and for the hard-working Taxpayers who President Biden tried to force into footing the bill for debt they didn’t incur and a benefit they didn’t receive.

1/ While the Supreme Court ruled against @POTUS Biden’s student-debt relief that I supported, I’ll keep working on this. I’m an original co-sponsor of the College for All Act (HR 4117) & also support expansion of the Pell Grant system & making community college tuition-free. pic.twitter.com/ergMrIOd3L
