Kathleen ‘Katie’ Ford, an Army veteran and special education therapist, has been nominated by the Delaware County Republican Party as its candidate in the upcoming special election in the 163rd House District.
The special election is needed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mike Zabel from the seat on March 16.
“Given the numerous scandals in our local community related to our elected officials — ranging from a mayor who has mismanaged taxpayer dollars and was arrested to a state representative who resigned following accusations of sexual harassment — I will work to restore integrity in our state and local government,” Ford said in a statement. “We have too many elected officials who are nominated and elected to office because of backroom deals and who they know in political party leadership. We need people who are going to focus on doing what’s right by the community, not on paying back their political friends and donors with jobs and contracts.”
A lifelong resident of Upper Darby, Ford has a long record of volunteer service in the community including contributing time to the musical at Drexel Hill Middle School, the Brad Schoener Foundation, the Upper Darby Arts and Education Foundation, Upper Darby High School Home and School, the Band and Orchestra at Drexel Hill Middle School, and a number of other organizations.
She served in the Army for eight years as a trained combat medic and currently works as a special needs instructor, focusing on providing direct support to children from birth to 3 years old and their families in early intervention.
“Given my background and experience, one of my top priorities in the Pennsylvania House will be to fight for the increased funding needed to properly educate our children, including those with special needs,” Ford said. “As the spouse of police officer, public safety, adequate funding, and training for law enforcement will also be a top priority.”
Former congressional candidate Dave Galluch tweeted, “Mom. Veteran. Disability advocate. Coach. Volunteer. I can’t think of a better Republican candidate to replace Mike Zabel in the 163rd Legislative District.”
Ford plans to hold a press conference on Monday outside her Alexander Avenue home in Drexel Hill.
The 163rd district includes Aldan, Clifton Heights, Collingdale and parts of Upper Darby.
