Democrats Endorse Peduto for Pittsburgh Mayor

Barbin in PittsburghThe Allegheny County Democratic Committee met over the weekend to endorse for the local races in 2017, including the mayoral race.

Mayor Bill Peduto defeated City Councilwoman Darlene Harris, the only other candidate to file for the endorsement.  According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Peduto won 372 to 245.

“We took 60 percent of the vote, which is a pretty decisive victory,” Peduto spokesman Matt Merriman-Preston said.

Despite his two previous bids for mayor, it was Peduto’s first time seeking the committee endorsement. Peduto represents the progressive wing of Allegheny County party, while the committee tends to lean toward blue dog Dems.

Harris has not officially declared for the Mayoral race and said she will decide by Tuesday if she will make a bid. Pulling 40% of the committee vote against the incumbent Mayor may not be a deterrent.

A third candidate, Rev. John Welch did not seek the endorsement, but was outside the hall talking to party members.

The big question for party members going into the day was who would be endorsed for the Court of Common Pleas, where Patrick Connelly and David Spurgeon both won the endorsements.  The Party endorsed incumbent Sheriff Bill Mullen, who received the most votes of the day with 1,137.  The race for the 4th City Council district saw Anthony Coghill beat Gary McBurney, but Ashleigh Deemer did not seek the party’s endorsement.

Statewide judicial candidates including Superior Court candidates Maria McLaughlin and Judge Carolyn Nichols, and Commonwealth Court candidates State Rep. Bryan Barbin, Timothy Barry, Irene Clark, and Todd Eagen were at the meeting circulating petitions and meeting with party members.

  1. Sanctuary cities? Please! Accommodating a few bike riders at the expense of tens of thousands trying to get to and from work? Okay.

  2. congrats to you bill on the endorsement and I do support you everyway I can.

  3. 372 to 245 against an unpopular Seahag ain’t a win for a sitting mayor. Uncle Charley says we got a billion dollars worth of bond issues to refinance in the city so this campaign is just getting started.
Big Fart might be popular now with the left wing east end commies but when we are done, it will be business as usual and back to pay for play. We also aren’t concerned about the local lying media because they are gutless and refused to endorse in the prez race so we will be free to speak the truth without fear of correction. Just in case, does anybody remember the name of the guy we used to beat up the drunk lawyer who ran against my cousin Stevie, Junior? Never mind. The godfather is calling Johnny Doc. He owes us a favor.
