DeSantis To Rally for Mastriano in Pittsburgh

A potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate is hitting the campaign trail to boost GOP candidates on the ballot this fall in several swing states and will be making an appearance in the Keystone State along the way.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will be headlining a Turning Points Action “Unite & Win” rally in Pittsburgh to promote state Sen. Doug Mastriano’s campaign for Governor on August 19.

Mastriano has shared the news on his social media accounts and even pinned an article to the top of his Twitter account detailing DeSantis’ upcoming campaign event for him.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the Democratic candidate for Governor, also sent out a tweet on Monday morning addressing the upcoming rally.

“We’re running in the most competitive state in the nation — and now Ron DeSantis is coming to town attempting to boost Doug Mastriano,” Shapiro wrote on Twitter. “Pennsylvania, all eyes are on us. Let’s defeat their extremism, win this election, and refocus on getting things done for our Commonwealth.”

While DeSantis is slated to rally support for Mastriano next week, the Republican Governors Association has yet to place a general election TV ad buy for the Pennsylvania GOP gubernatorial hopeful. POLITICO reported on Monday morning that the RGA has rolled out its “first round of major TV ad buys ahead of the 2022 midterms, investing $31.4 million in five states,” but not including Pennsylvania.

Several national ratings outlets currently have the gubernatorial race slightly favoring Shapiro. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball have the Pennsylvania race for Governor currently rated as Leans Democrat, while Inside Elections labels the race in the Keystone State as Tilt Democrat.

This is not the first time DeSantis has planned a visit to Pennsylvania for a political event. In May 2021, DeSantis headlined the Allegheny County Republican Committee’s Lincoln Day Dinner. This previous event also resulted in further speculation about the Florida Governor’s potential interest for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

In addition to Pennsylvania, DeSantis is also scheduled to promote GOP candidates for statewide office in Arizona, New Mexico, and Ohio. All of the candidates DeSantis is leading rallies for have also been endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
