Fact Check: New Sestak Ad Hides Joe’s Record of Raising Taxes on the Middle Class and Support for Corporate Giveaways 

Allentown, PA – Congressman Joe Sestak’s latest attack ad throws a lot of mud, but leaves out a lot of information about his own record – like his record of voting for massive new tax increases on the middle class and his support for corporate giveaways on the taxpayer’s dime. 
 
“It’s no surprise that Congressman Sestak has been running one attack ad after another – he is trying desperately to run away from his own record of raising taxes on the middle class and bailing out Wall Street,” Toomey Communications Director Nachama Soloveichik said.  “Congressman Sestak can talk about cutting taxes, but Pennsylvania voters will be looking at his record not what he says on the campaign trail.” 

Joe Sestak: “I support cutting taxes for the middle class . . . not the big banks.” Fact Check: Sestak supported hundreds of billions – if not trillions – of dollars in new tax increases on the middle class and voted for the $700 billion giveaway to the Wall Street banks while forcing middle class taxpayers to foot the bill. 

Cap-and-trade energy tax: Joe Sestak voted for the cap-and-trade energy taxwhich will slam middle class taxpayers and small business owners with new energy taxes totaling $821 billion (RC #477, 06/26/09) (CBO, 06/05/09).

Health care taxes:Joe Sestak voted for President Obama’s government-run health care which included more than $600 billion in new taxes, many of which will be paid by middle-class taxpayers and small business owners(RC #165, 3/21/10).

FY 2008 budget:Joe Sestak voted for the Democrats’ FY 2008 budget resolution which included $2.7 trillion in tax increases over ten years (RC #377, 05/17/07) (Heritage Foundation, 05/17/07).
FY 2009 budget:Joe Sestak voted for the Democrats’ FY 2009 budget which included $3 trillion in tax increases over the next decade, or $3,135 per household annually (RC #382, 06/05/08) (Heritage Foundation, 06/05/08).
FY 2010 budget: Joe Sestak voted for the Democrats’ FY 2010 budget resolution which included at least $1 trillion in tax increase (RC #216, 04/29/09) (ATR, 03/03/09).
Death Tax:Joe Sestak voted against permanently repealing the Death Tax (Vote #959, 10/10/07).  Many of the people affected by the Death Tax are middle class family-owned businesses and farmers.
Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: Joe Sestak voted to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (RC #519, 07/23/08).

Wall Street: Joe Sestak voted to bail out Wall Street – twice! (RC #681, 10/03/08) (RC #27, 01/22/09)
Auto Companies: Joe Sestak voted to bail out the auto companies (RC #690, 12/10/08).
