GOP Ad Links Cartwright to Impeachment

All nine Pennsylvania House Democrats support the impeachment inquiry into President Trump and his dealings with Ukraine. But some stand on riskier ground than others.

Republicans hope to turn the issue into a liability for Democrats who represent districts Trump won in 2016, including Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-Lackawanna).

Congressional Leadership Fund, the GOP super PAC connected with House Republican leadership, launched digital ads in three districts across the country including Cartwright’s. They accuse him of “pushing a radical scheme to impeach President Trump.”

“Washington Democrats are marching toward impeachment,” a voiceover says at the beginning of the 30 second ad from the Congressional Leadership Fund

The ad continues to include clips of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) offering words of support towards impeaching Trump, attempting to link Cartwright with them.

The digital ad also targets freshmen Reps. Reps. Elaine Luria (D-VA) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI). It launched Monday and will air during Congress’s current two-week recess.

Cartwright’s campaign did not respond to comment.

Cartwright offered his support for an impeachment inquiry last Tuesday afternoon saying that the recent report reveals that there “have been credible allegations this week that the President abused the power of his office, on the international stage, for his own political gain.”

A Quinnipiac University poll released on Monday, the same day the ads launched, showed that the country was divided, 47-47 percent, on the question of if President Trump should be impeached and removed from office. The sharp divide falls along partisan lines with 90% of Democrats supporting impeachment and just 5% opposing it, while 92% of Republicans oppose impeachment, and just 7% support it. The week prior, polling showed just 37% answered yes to this question, while 57% voted no.

Cartwright voiced support for an impeachment inquiry, but has not said whether he supports removing him from office.

Cartwright represents the most Trump-friendly district held by a Democrat in Pennsylvania. Trump carried it by close to 10 points in 2016. Cartwright bested Republican Matt Connolly by a 7.6 point margin in 2016 and won by a slightly larger margin in 2018 by taking down GOP candidate John Chrin by just over 9 points.

Cartwright, along with fellow Democratic Reps. Conor Lamb (D-Allegheny) and Susan Wild (D-Lehigh), have been targeted by the CLF and the NRCC as seats to flip in 2020.

  1. I posted the following on Twitter…
Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) must be scaring the shit out of Republicans. The GOP PAC is spending what seems to be millions in dark money slamming him in TV ads here in PA. The ad tries to make his support for our orange slime ball in the WH impeachment seem like a bad thing. Write Rep Cartwright and tell him we have his back. @rebCartwright Better yet call his office number which they are trying to fill with anti messages and tell him we know those ads are pure bullshit. 570 341 1050. And remember come 2020 vote Blue all the way down the ticket.

  2. Harry Haas and some other guy with no name recognition are the best the R’s have? Pathetic. Neither has enough street credibility or charisma to beat Cartwright. Rs really scraping the bottom of barrel.

  3. Saw the commercial on TV during the local news this morning. Very creepy! The GOP needs to do better than spreading propaganda and always bowing to Trump.

  4. Awesome. Here is Cartwright’s chance to embrace this head on. Launch concurrent ads proudly proclaiming his fight against the single most corrupt and dishonest elected official of any stripe, ever. Proudly point out how he upholds his Constitutional obligation to provide check and balance over such a person, exactly as the Founders intended.

Ride this gimme the whole way to a blowout re-election, Matt. I have no doubt that AOC, Tlaib and TheBern will do so. Now will Lurie, Cartwright and Slotkin have guts and wisdom to?

  5. Article in the Washington Examiner about Cartwright ethics violation. When is Politics Pa gonna cover that?

  6. Let me talk everyone off the ledge. This ad is the brainchild of Washington political consultants who earn a living placing these ads in media markets and are funded by wealthy Republican donors. The ad has little to do with the voters in Cartwright’s district nor does it have much to do with Cartwright. It’s all politics and a lot of nonsense. Of course, Washington RNC big wigs and their political consultants will convince themselves of their brilliance and keep spending donor money. “Trump district” term is a fallacy in 2020 as even the most restrained political analysis such as the newsletter “Inside Elections” has Cartwright as “Likely Democrat” which is one step away from “Solid Democrat.” Bottom line: Don’t be fooled by the RNC Washington political shuffle as Cartwright looks really good in 2020 as Trump politically meanders all over the place.

  7. Why is PoliticsPA promoting another bullshit propaganda thug and despicable lobby group?

  8. Republicans are cowards, plain and simple. Need big guns to compensate for lack of…well, everything. Complain about bias when people don’t agree with them. Afraid of immigrants even though their ancestors were. Constantly lie and project. The Republican party is a stain, and anyone associated with them will be on the wrong side of history.

    1. It appears you were associated with them. How long were you on the wrong side of history?

  9. Let’s see how pro-Trump the GOP candidate for this office is going to be in 2020 after more information comes out on 45’s self-serving actions come out. Or maybe the R’s will do a Lindsay Graham style flip flop and pretend this type of ad never happened.

  10. I’m a little rusty on my campaign finance law. Does Mr. Cartwright need to report this as an in-kind donation?

  11. This is a Badge of Courage that Cartwright should wear proudly. One day soon, the Republicans are going to have to atone for their corruption and disrespect for the Constitution and the rule of law. Trump is a vile human being and he bankrupts, both financially and morally, everything he comes in contact with. Members of Congress should act on the evidence – NOT on political affiliation. Lindsey Graham said it best “Impeachment is a way to cleanse the office of President… when a stain is put upon it”.
