GRAPH: Where did all the Republicans go?

APRIL 2009: PA GOP CLAIMS TO HAVE 40,000 VOLUNTEERS: State GOP chairman Rob Gleason outlined the party’s so-called Victory Program during a late-morning conference call with reporters. He said it will “serve as a hub for the party’s grassroots efforts,” and will eventually involve 30 full-time staffers and 40,000 volunteers in 20 counties.
AUGUST 2010: PA GOP CLAIMS TO HAVE 40,000-50,000 VOLUNTEERS: Those staffers are expected to direct GOP volunteers that officials numbered in the 40,000 to 50,000 range.
OCTOBER 2010: PA GOP LATER CLAIMS TO HAVE 25,000 VOLUNTEERS: Presidential years typically are high-water marks for engagement, but state GOP executive director Luke Bernstein — running the coordinated statewide campaign for federal, state and local candidates — said the party has surpassed 2008 in volunteer registration, with 25,000 people signed on to help the Republicans.
NOVEMBER 2010: PA GOP NOW CLAIMS THEY HAVE 5,000 VOLUNTEERS: That information is automatically uploaded into the computer system with the voter’s phone number so canvassers can target the homes of voters who support the GOP, but might be wavering on whether to come out to vote. About 5,000 volunteers are expected to work election day.
