Harper, Mercyhurst Polls Show Dead Heats in Presidential, Senate Races

voting-boothThe biggest races in the Keystone State are incredibly tight.

After the latest Morning Call/Muhlenberg and CNN polls, two more surveys from Harper and Mercyhurst have confirmed how close the presidential and Senate contests are.

President

Harper did not have a head-to-head match-up between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump but they do have one including Gary Johnson and Jill Stein.

Clinton leads Trump by two, 45% to 43%, while Johnson has 8% and Stein only 1%. 4% were undecided.

According to Harper’s crosstabs, Johnson is likely taking away more voters from Clinton than Trump which has also been the case nationwide.

Mercyhurst also found Clinton with a razor-thin lead, this time just one-point.

They have the former Secretary of State at 42% and the GOP nominee with 41%. Johnson and Stein got 4% and 3% respectively. 9% didn’t know and 2% refused to answer.

Senate

The PA Senate is actually even closer than the top-ballot contest.

Harper has this race tied at 42-42. It’s worth pointing out that they included Libertarian Party nominee Edward Clifford in their survey and he got eight percent. Another eight percent were undecided.

Meanwhile, Mercyhurst has Toomey with a 43-42 advantage over McGinty. Fifteen percent said they didn’t know and an additional one percent refused.

Forty-two days out, these races couldn’t be much tighter.

Harper Polling surveyed 500 likely voters through landline interviews conducted using Interactive Voice Response (IVR). The poll took place between on September 21st and September 22nd. The margin of error is +/- 4.4%.

Mercyhurst University’s Center for Applied Politics surveyed 420 registered Pennsylvania voters through live interviews from September 12th to September 23rd. The margin of error is 4.8%.

  1. After Trump’s horrible debate performance Monday night, I expect the next round of polls showing Clinton pulling ahead by 5-6% points in PA.

  2. So is the libertarian candidate pulling more from Toomey or McGinty? Classical deficiency in this reporting, they cite the effect of the libertarian in one race, but not the other.
