HD-170: Special Election to Fill Boyle’s Seat Scheduled for March 24th

Mike-TurzaiElection day is coming early for the citizens of the 170th Legislative District.

Speaker of the House Mike Turzai (R- Allegheny County) today announced a special election to take place on March 24 in order fill the seat vacated by Rep. Brendan Boyle.

Boyle retired on January 2 before being sworn into the U.S. Congress as the representative of PA’s 13th Congressional District.

Turzai filed the writ of election with the Department of State while a copy of the writ is also being filed with the board of elections in Philadelphia.

The respective political parties will determine the process of selecting their candidates. Republicans have already coalesced around Martina White.

Congressman Boyle and his brother State Rep. Kevin Boyle are known to favor Seth Kaplan (the latter’s Chief of Staff) for the position. The nomination, though, will ultimately be decided by the local party leaders.

  1. Why is $ being spent on a Special Election in at the end of March when there is a pre-scheduled election being held in the middle of May? Would be more economically sensible to do it in May rather than on a day at the end of March…especially in a state where the GOP has left us billions in the hole. Guess this is more politically advantageous for the Speaker Turzai and the GOP? Wasting our tax dollars for their own political gain…again!

  2. Isn’t there an issue about state rep. selection and the city’s democratic party bylaws being changed, perhaps outside the scope of the required process?
