HD59: Special Election Set for May 18

House Speaker Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) announced May 18 as the special election date to fill the open state House seat previously held by the late state Rep. Mike Reese (R-Westmoreland).

Reese died after suffering an apparent brain aneurysm on January 2. He was 42 years old.

“Rep. Reese set an example for every legislator to follow, and he is greatly missed in the chamber by members and close friends on both sides of the aisle,” Cutler said. “His commitment to his family and his constituents could never be questioned, and he leaves enormous shoes to fill on our House Republican leadership team.”

Reese was first elected to represent the 59th House District in Westmoreland and Somerset counties in 2008. Reese served as the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus Secretary in the 2019-2020 session and was reelected to serve in that role again in the upcoming session.

Reese ran unopposed in his most recent reelection bid.

The parties will pick the candidates to run in the special election, which will take place on the same day as the state’s primary election.
