Innamorato Captures Democratic Nod for Allegheny County Executive

Sara Innamorato

State Rep. Sara Innamorato has claimed victory in the Democratic primary for Allegheny County Executive.

The 37-year-old progressive will take on Republican Joe Rockey in the November general election. In a county where Democrats have a 2-to-1 registration advantage, she finds herself in an advantageous position to replace term-limited Rich Fitzgerald.

With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Innamorato won 37.54% of the vote to outdistance runner-up John Weinstein, the County’s Treasurer, by more than 13,000 votes and eight points.

City controller Michael Lamb finished third at 19.85%, while attorney Dave Fawcett was a distant fourth with 9.71 percent.

“Government should be a reflection of all of us — of our values, our priorities, and our morals — and if we do not see that reflected back onto us, it is our duty to change that through organizing and voting… and then using that same energy to co-govern alongside those who we put in power,” said Innamorato. “Throughout this campaign we met people where they are at, engaged our neighbors in values-based conversations about housing, good union jobs, corporate accountability, and clean air and water.

“We built a coalition that looks like the county, because that’s how you govern effectively and inclusively. Together, we will elect the first Woman County Executive in Allegheny County history!”

Gov. Josh Shapiro said, “The future of Western Pennsylvania is bright, and I’m looking forward to working alongside you to get things done and lift up the good people of Allegheny County.”

Innamorato’s win follows in the footsteps of fellow progressives such as U.S. Rep. Summer Lee and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey.

Voter turnout was just shy of 45 percent in the county that includes the City of Pittsburgh.
