July Jobs Report: Unemployment Steady at 5.6%

After four straight months of a rising unemployment rate, it finally remained stable in July. The national rate also went unchanged at 4.9%.

The civilian labor force was down by 15,000 from last month. Resident employment declined by 18,000 while unemployment rolls went up 3,000.

Total nonfarm jobs rose 7,900 and six of the eleven supersectors saw gains. The largest was in education & health services (+3,100). The biggest drop was in financial activities and professional & business services (-1,600).

Over the past year, PA has gained 58,000 total nonfarm jobs and nine of the eleven supersectors experienced increases. The biggest gain was education & health services (+28,000) and the largest decline was mining & logging (-9,300).
