June 15th Playbook

Vice President Mike Pence visited western PA, while several contested primary races have come to a close. Here is the Playbook.

June 12th Ups & Downs: The lone contested statewide primary has come to a close, management and staff at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette continue to feud, plus Erie County gets a community college. All of that and more are in this week’s Ups and Downs.

Liberal PAC Aims To Win Over Senior Voters For Biden in PA Ad: American Bridge, which describes itself as “the largest research, video tracking, and rapid response organization in Democratic politics,” is spending over $10 million in paid media 10-week campaign aimed at weakening President Donald Trump’s support with seniors and “small-town rural” voters.

For results on races called prior to today, check out previous Playbooks starting from June 3.

Primary Election Update:

WINNER: PA9 Dem: Gary Wegman defeated Laura Quick by just over 1,000 votes, according to reported vote totals as of Friday morning, the Reading Eagle reports. Wegman will face Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Luzerne) in the fall for the seat.

WRITE-IN: HD3 GOP: Republican Greg Hayes launched a successful write-in campaign for the GOP nomination by receiving 1,372 write-in votes. Hayes will attempt to unseat state Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) in November.

INCUMBENT LEADS: HD22 Dem: State Rep. Peter Schweyer (D-Lehigh) leads Enid Santiago by 55 votes, which is slightly more than 1%, in this majority Latino district, according to county website results. Lehigh Valley Live reports that although Schweyer declared victory in the race, Santiago is calling for a special election for the seat.

INCUMBENT WINS: HD39 GOP: State Rep. Michael Puskaric (R-Allegheny) narrowly edged out challenger Tom Kirsch by 178 votes, according to KDKA. This race was a grudge match for the old Saccone seat; the former State Rep. backed Kirsch. Puskaric will go up against Democrat Sara-Summer Oliphant in the fall.

LEADER: HD75 GOP: Mike Armanini holds a 3 point lead over Lisa Becker in the three candidate race to succeed state Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield). The winner will face Democrat Ryan Grimm in the fall for the GOP friendly district.

INCUMBENT LEADS: HD106 GOP: State Rep. Thomas Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) leads Chris Lupp and Mimi Legro in the primary. The winner of this race will face Democrat Lindsay Drew.

WINNER: HD127 GOP: Vincent Gagliardo Jr. bested Branden Moyer in the primary by 26 votes, according to the Reading Eagle. Gagliardo Jr. will face Democrat Manuel Guzman. The seat is held by state Rep. Thomas Caltagirone (D-Berks), who is retiring at the end of his current term.

INCUMBENT LEADS: HD175 Dem: State Rep. Mary Isaacson (D-Philadelphia) holds a 1,084 vote lead, 7%, over Vanessa McGrath, Jeff Dempsey, and Andre Del Valle in the four candidate primary among in-person votes. The mail-in ballots will determine the outcome. Isaacson nearly doubled her lead in comparison to Friday morning when she held a 548 vote lead in the race.

INCUMBENT LEADS: HD182 Dem: State Rep. Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) leads challenger Marisa Shaaban by 2,777 votes, 15%, with all of the in-person votes accounted for, while the mail-in votes are still coming in. The GOP candidate in this safe Dem district is Drew Murray. Sims nearly added 1,000 votes to his lead in the race as of Friday morning, when he held a 1,786 vote advantage in the race.

INCUMBENT TRAILS: HD188 Dem: Rick Krajewski holds a 2,590 vote, 19%, over state Rep. James Roebuck Jr. (D-Philadelphia) in the four candidate primary. Krajewski extended his lead since Friday morning, when he led by 1,610 votes.

LEADER CHANGE: TOSSUP: HD198 Dem: Darisha Parker now holds a 257 vote lead in the primary over Bernard Williams, while Fareed Abdullah and Supreme Dow also trail for the seat held by outgoing state Rep. Rosita Youngblood (D-Philadelphia). As of Friday morning, Williams held a 122 vote lead in the primary. The margin between first and last place is also slim.
